I do not tend to write reviews, but my experience as a tenant with Rettie & Co. leaves me no choice.
The services were appalling from the start. The agents responsible for the management of my tenancy postponed the move-in date after having confirmed it in writing, resulting in a 500.00 GBP cancellation fee I had no choice but to pay to the already booked moving company.
Upon entry, we noticed the 20+ year old washing machine contained extensive amounts of mould which rendered it unusable. Rettie & Co. refused to even attempt to convince the landlord to replace the washing machine. I was left no choice but to buy my own machine 2 weeks into the tenancy. Furthermore, they refused to collect the old machine, even after I offered to transport it myself to the location of the landlords' choosing. Hence, the old foul-smelling machine had to remain in a corner of the flat during the 1 year tenancy.
The >30 year old boiler also broke down weeks into the tenancy. My family was left without heating and hot water for over 1 week in the middle of winter. I received no apology for the delay in the repair and services, nothing - compared to my current private landlord who booked and payed for a hotel for us to stay when the boiler failed, in addition to 100.00 GBP reduction in rent.
They provided a flat that was NOT professionally cleaned, yet claimed cleaning costs upon terminating the tenancy, despite having left the flat in better condition than it was given to us.
I could go on listing the poor encounters with Rettie & Co.. In summary, I felt robbed. The rent alone for a mere unfurnished 2 bedroom flat was 1,450.00 GBP per month. The appliances were all over 15 years old, and in extremely poor condition - most, if not all needed repair during my tenancy. And they still had the audacity to initially ask for 1,650.00 GBP per month for this flat.
My only advice to tenants would be to avoid letting agencies in Edinburgh at all costs, their poor reputation precedes them.
Do yourself a favour and search for private landlords when possible.
