I wish to expression my immense dissatisfaction…

I wish to expression my immense dissatisfaction with Bidwells. I was selling a 5 bedroom detached house on the edge of the city of Cambridge - and it was the most stressful house sale I've ever experienced!First of all I was repeatedly "fobbed-off" (I could use plain English here but I don't want to risk getting into any libel action...) - regarding the simple wording of my property. Over the period of about two weeks I was "fobbed-off" in various guises in desperate attempts by Bidwells not to let me have the wording I wanted! The requested changes were very subtle in any case - and were lifted from a previous brochure to sell this house by another large estate agent firm about five years ago - so it’s not like there was anything controversial, risqué, or unacceptable about it?! The original provisional wording suggested by Bidwells was frankly naïve and really not very good - and didn't even mention that it was in extremely sought-after Cambridge(!) (they just wanted to say it was near Great Shelford?!) - and clearly it was rushed by someone very inexperienced. I was within a hair’s width of not using Bidwells after two weeks of being "fobbed off" about why they "couldn't" change a simple sentence! In the end I just thought I couldn’t be bothered going through the process and delay of finding another agent - and let it be…! But I was fuming...Then there was the matter of being "fobbed-off" to about the cost of doing all the photography, virtual tour (including hosting), and floor plans - which I provided myself as a professional photographer. Bidwells must take me for a complete fool to tell me that all this costs “around £100” - when I have been doing this sort of thing professionally for nearly twenty years! And the costs I was credited with for the last property I sold - twelve years ago - was £500 (more like £750-£1,000 at today’s prices)...!In view of the fact I did the photography, the not inconsiderable virtual tour, the floor plans, and did all the viewings - it is hard to see how Bidwells can justify their £11,500 (inc. VAT) fee… Sometimes things work out for estate agents and sales go through very easily - and sometimes it’s much harder - and it’s just the roll of the dice. And if I hadn’t been blatantly "fobbed-off" over two separate things I wouldn’t have minded about Bidwells’ extreme luck with this sale. However, when a company such as Bidwells behaves in such an unscrupulous, underhanded, and unethical manner, then I take extreme exception that they should so massively profit at my expense…I complained to Biwwells and someone "senior" called me. He tried to belittle the hastle I endured with the two weeks' wording change (he clearly hadn't seen the long email trail I had to endure). Regarding the work I did that was only valued at £100, I said to him I simply don't belief anyone could do all that for £100, and I asked for evidence in the form of invoices of the cost of a similar sized property. He said he would do that. I said it was not about money - it was about a principle - that I had been twice deceived by Bidwells - and that was totally unacceptable - especially from a company who has profited so much from me. He also said he would formally reply to my complaint early the following week (it was Friday when we spoke on the phone). On the phone he was all sweetness and light, and Bidwells prides itself..., and Bidwells would never... - blah, blah, blah. He never got back to me... Go figure...A final word. The buyer lived just down the road and bumped into me after collecting the keys. She was clutching a bottle of champaign Bidwells gave her - and no doubt received much thanks. However, as the seller - who made the sale, and did most of the work - and paid them £11,500 - all I got was a deduction mentioned on the invoice from my solicitor...!So what did Bidwells do for their £11,500 fee? I had one valuation visit, they put an advert on their website and a leading property website, and made a few telephone calls. I did the rest. Not even a thank you for using their services...!

If I could have given zero or negative stars, I would have done so. My experience of this estate agent is as a prospective buyer. And, as a result of my experience, I would never buy a property through these people, and suggest you too give them a wide berth. They provide misleading information regarding properties, both on their website and accompanying brochures. Then, when you ask to withdraw from the purchase because of what you discover about the property, they hit you with extortionate withdrawal fees and blame the client and their client's solicitor, even though the only agreement you have signed is with them. Even worse, they send you insulting emails trying to make you feel bad about your decision to withdraw. Of course, after complaining about such, they apologise. But the damage has already been done. Querying the withdrawal fees, which they call "administration fees" doesn't get you far. You get no breakdown of tasks, just that you have been charged for one hour, at a cost of £375+VAT. Wow! That is more than most people earn in a week! Absolutely disgraceful!!

We have just completed our sale of Hills rd and our purchase of Luard rd. As can happen in relatively high value exchanges £2-3 million it turned out to be a fairly complex and protracted affair. Not given to reviews normally, I felt I had to say how outstanding Bidwells have been. Andrew Tucker dealt with our transaction and was diligent to detail and resolute in his determination to do things in a thoroughly professsional way but also, importantly, one that extracted the absolute best outcome for us - and that is quite some balancing act. Highly recommended.

Worst lettings agent in Cambridgeshire

I have nothing positive to say. We moved into a new-build detached property 3 years ago and our experience with Bidwells has been a struggle throughout. We have had an endless list of property managers who are all well-skilled in ignoring emails and feigning absence when you call them. They give you false information and never check when you ask questions. We have had to pay for our own contractors to fix things because they are constantly absent. Writing to their CEO to highlight our concerns made no difference as our emails were, obviously, ignored. We have had to open a communication line directly with our landlord now as it's made our life impossible. It's no wonder they're seen as the cheap property management alternative. If you can, avoid them.
