Poor quality house and equally poor quality customer care.

We bought a Cala home after hearing they had a reputation as a quality builder with excellent customer service. Unfortunately this has not been the reality. The standard of workmanship in the house is extremely poor. There is barely a straight wall in the house. Almost 2 years after getting the keys, we are still waiting for a damaged bath to be replaced (they’ve tried to deliver 2 more damaged ones in that time). We’ve witnessed them bribing contractors we were paying for other work, by offering alcohol in return for these contractors completing snagging work which Cala didn’t want to do. It has been a tiresome process battling to get Cala to resolve often minor issues. I’ve taken days off work, only for nobody to show up when arranged. Meetings with customer service managers have achieved next to nothing. Buying a new home from Cala has been a stressful and entirely unenjoyable experience which we’d never repeat again

From the moment he stepped into our home, it was evident that he takes immense pride in his work. He’s always on time, works hard, and really cares about making us happy. His work is excellent - he pays attention to every little thing. We’re always happy when he’s the one helping us out. Shopwyke Lakes, Chichester Mortar Issue

Cala have told our Residents Committee that the mortar on the flats at Shopwyke Lakes in Chichester has been "repaired where required". This is beyond lies and a joke. They started repointing the flats on one elevation but did not do that right. No grinding out of failed mortar, and just patching up some of the awful erosion.Work has now stopped as the NHBC has allegedly stated the issue is not structural. This is disgraceful as the erosion has become worse year after year and the flats will look like they are in a war zone before long.NHBC - you are a disgrace. Obviously that is a well known fact with the creation of the New Homes Ombudsman. Let's hope your days are numbered.Fear not Cala, you will be exposed by the press very soon. So many of us on this development know what you are like and will gladly let the country know.Again, one star as there is no option to give zero.

Arlesey Grange mould on bedroom ceiling.

Reported concern to customer services, In January Eric the operative came in to look at the concern. He identified the concern in the loft, very quickly. He returned to the property soon afterwards and made good the concern. Eric went over and above checking all areas of the loft looking for leaks from the extractor vent pipes. He then made good the ceiling, working very tidy and efficiently making no mess in the process. Eric explained what he had done, and came back a few days afterwards to check his repair. Brilliant job well done Eric.

Excellent Customer Service

After customer service is great! All solutions are just a call/email away.Claire is outstanding in handling customer queries. So far all my queries were resolved quickly. There were few bits pending from site team from sometime due to unavailability of the site manager. But when took follow up with Claire, she went a mile ahead and took all the steps to get this fixed.Cala sales and after sales service team both are excellent. I would have given 5 star in my reviews but I am not happy with the sound proofing in the flats. So one star less for that. But insulation to keep flat warmer is amazing.

We are just about to move into our first Cala home in Glasgow once everything has been finalised and we would like to give a special mention to Vicky and her team who have been outstanding so far in their commitment and communication in helping us to seal a deal. Everything has happened so quickly after our first viewing of the Duplex only a couple of weeks ago. We have just had our IEM meeting yesterday with Vicky and the head builder and we were so impressed by Cala’s standards of workmanship and attention to detail. Purchased a property at Roman Park, Tring. Very happy with the house and the service received from Cala. Geraldine in the sales office was always on hand to answer questions and show us around the show home/s...Matt, the Site Manager has been great, from showing us around our new home through to dealing with snagging and arranging for these to be promptly resolved. To be honest, all the trades that have been on site to resolve issues have been fantastic. Bellwood Oaks

Have lived on Bellwood Oaks development for over 3 years- still waiting for driveway repairs. The SUDS area which we assumed was completed was suddenly turned into something resembling a WW1 battlefield end of last year . Residents were not informed of what’s happening or what will be done & when. Tried contacting customer service & contract manager but they won’t reply to emails. Today some landscaping appeared to be starting then it all got pulled out again . Still no contact with residents. The roads have still not been repaired & are a mess. Very disappointed with a supposed 5 star builder.

I’ve just bought a house at Roman park . This was my first time buying a new build and in my experience the process has been great . Geraldine from the sales side was lovely keeping me informed at every stage sending updates and pictures. The move in was seamless , the house demonstration by Matt the site manager was very thorough . The snags that I did have were dealt with quickly . After sales poor customer service. Cala West Scotland

Everything went well until we had to close the snagging list.We moved to our cala home in Lenzie three years ago and still have several outstanding items to close. They have ignored us for months. They don’t finish snagging jobs they start and leave you with jobs half way done for months.We complained about the noise in our living room when water is flushed from the upstairs bathrooms and their solution has been to add a little bit of insulating material in the living room corner ceiling. Nothing has changed, the horrible noise is still there. We know they have applied a different solution, involving changing the bathroom down pipe layout, to our neighbour who has the same house than us but they refuse to do that in our house simply because it is too much work to them.Our front garden soil is in a very poor condition till a point that nothing apart from grass can be planted. The subsoil is full of coarse fragments from the construction and not in compliance with the NHBC recommendation and BS standards. We emailed them about this on 08 September 2023 and we are still waiting for a response.Similarly the heat pump plumbing is incorrect and we are still waiting for them to correct it.To finish, they forgot to do any landscaping to the side of our house as per the plan and they keep telling us every year that they will do it. Three years later and nothing done.If you want to wait years to get things done then buy a Cala home!

We moved in to our new home at Roman Park Tring at the end of November. The whole process from start to finish has been a very positive experience. From Geraldine in the sales office to Matt and Connor the site Manager. Over the first few weeks we found a couple of minor snagging issues. Farendon Fields - amazing experience

I moved into my Cala home recently at Farendon Fields and am amazed by the house and my experience with Cala. When I give a review or state an opinion I have to give details so be warned this is a long detailed review. Other detailed reviews helped me with my decision so I hope it well help others!Firstly - the presales experience was so effortless, the sales team - Susie, Caroline & Belinda kept ontop of every stage and moved things along for me with my solicitor so we were able to complete super fast without my needing to do much. Cala offered incentives and a part exchange and the whole process was honest, transparent and super quick. The sales team literally glided us through it all - so easy ! Another thing I love about this team - they promise and over-deliver every time (I've since learnt its the cala way). I've worked with developers who promise everything and then dissappear or require lots of chasing.Since we have been here they check in regularly and nothing is ever too much for them when you ask for help - super thoughtful! (Even offered to hold the baby whilst we unloaded boxes). The site teams after sales care is incredible. Marius the deputy site manager is so quick to respond to any questions (and I've asked so many silly things). Nothing is ever a silly question according to him and he is there literally in 10 min of sending a message to help. Annoyingly most of my queries have been user errors rather than anything being wrong and not once has he pointed it out : always a smile and making your question feel super important. This site team is one of the best I've ever experienced - Mariusz and Marius know their trade so well and are very hands on. (I've been on 2 previous new build sites too).I had to make this move with my husband in another city and with 2 kids I was so nervous. The site team and sales team have settled us in so well - I can't believe I was able to pull it off alone with the kids. They settled us in like family - couldn't be more grateful to them.I had a minor issue and the head of Customer Care assembled a small team including the site manager Mariusz who all showed up to our home on their day off to help us. It wasn't urgent to me but super urgent to them to resolve. They went above and beyond to make sure we were "cala comfortable". So impressed- it doesn't get better than this! Now for the house - I have experience with other developers and really noticed some big things. Given I was torn between cala and another developer I had to scrutinise everything for a comparison:1. Cala's basic spec home is every other developers upgraded premium home (with bells on). In other words - every house produced is kitted out and included within the price (quality appliances / boiler / water tank etc) By the time you've paid for upgrades with another developer you've wasted money. So Cala was definitely worth the money !! There's true value in their offers.2. Cala's known for very good quality homes BUT their luxury feel is not just the materials used to build the homes, its also the details (stunning skirting boards, door frames, really strong quality doors, extra high ceilings, invisible fixtures and fittings). The "instragammable" luxury is in all these details and what I love is the style is backed up by quality workmanship and materials. 3. They are an honest developer in the PX process- they aren't looking to make money on your trade in property like other developers. The sales team are just focused on getting you into your new home and keeping it all simple and transparent!In summary - you aren't a plot number or a sales figure - you're people to them and here at Farendon Fields they aren't just building homes - they're building communities and helping families with their next chapter. I am definitely a cala customer for life now...hubby and I are looking at our next onward purchase in the next few years and only lookung at homes built by Cala and now considering looking at different locations that only this particular cala team will be overseeing as there is so much trust in this team's ability and service!

Trading on an old reputation

Cala Homes West in Scotland is trading on an old reputation and is now no better than some other new build developers where quality and assurance checks appear absent or ineffective. In our experience there was poor quality on finishing (skirting boards had chips and knicks, interior painting looked thin and faded instead of fresh and dazzling, external doors not closing and sales agents making up stories to get us hooked. The fact that the sales contract states the buyer has to pledge they are not relying on anything the sales team has told them says it all. Get everything in writing before you hand over any money. "I've never heard of anything like that!" exclaims the agent when our faulty central heating had to be re-installed after moving in which involved ceilings coming down. When we got to know the other Cala residents we discovered there were many others in front of us complaining about poor quality and heating system issues. Cala told me they had their own building team of permanent tradesmen ("we are different to other builders in that we have our own building staff") but this amounted to 2 groundsmen and all the rest were unsupervised contractors. Note the Un-Supervised. We've had great new build houses before (10 and 20 years ago) and only a few snags which were very quickly sorted but this house has been built, in our opinion, without due care and attention. 39 snagging visits later we regret purchasing a home on a Cala development. Reply to Cala's comment below: we are in contact with Cala through the complaints process and hope redress will be made. Will update when this happens. We have sent you the details requested.
