Renting with Chancellors has been a nightmare, very slow to respond to anything at all. From the beginning, our supposedly unfurnished flat had a double bed and other furnishings in it. Which we had to remove ourselves because after 3 weeks, it still wasn't removed and was taking up our spare bedroom which was meant for my partner to be working from home. Generally repairs take a few weeks, which is longer than you would want. They told us that the flat had to be professionally cleaned before moving out - there's no way we were doing that. It certainly wasn't professionally cleaned when we moved in - clutter everywhere, things were dirty and we cleaned the oven ourselves when we moved in. They also raised the rent from £1400 to £1520 after a year because we were moving out soon, and didn't have anywhere to go otherwise. For the new tenant they then lowered it back to £1400 because they didn't have anyone taking the place for £1500. Then last but not least, we unfortunately forgot to cancel our direct debit and the rent still went out (£1520). This is a huge amount of money which was not accounted for in our budget, it has been nearly TWO WEEKS and it's still not returned. We have been chasing frequently and asking for our money back - it's almost as if they're holding onto our money intentionally. It does not take 2 weeks to do a bank transfer back. The landlord has been lovely however, and equally exasperated by Chancellor's incompetence. I honestly don't know who is leaving all the 5 star reviews. Maybe they're dealing with a different agency. Updated to add, I did email the email address supplied and had no answer.

Horrible service and an attitude not fitting for a lettings negotiator - Lily Isaac - who kept shouting over the phone repeatedly in the name of collecting details. Really unprofessional behaviour which put me off to even looking at other options listed by Chancellors in the area.

Rude and full of ridiculous conditions. Pass affordability AND have a guarantor? Or pay the entire year upfront AND STILL provide a guarantor? Who pays the entire year upfront, and why would you need a guarantor if you've paid upfront or if you've passed affordability? Complete nonsense and a sloppy attitude. There are far better estate agents in Oxford.

We are buying a house and Chancellor's have been great. Our contact, Sherko, has been brilliant - answered all our questions, helping us with timelines, and has been really friendly throughout. He's been really responsive on emails and the phones, and we're really grateful!

Travelled for three hours to view a property and the agent did not turn up. Unprofessional and just a shocking service. I called no answer/ response. Do not waste your time.

Worst possible service. Our experience with Chancellors has been absolutely terrible. From day one, the agent booked the viewing on the house for the wrong time, sent conflicting information, which resulted in my partner waiting for 2 hours under the rain. Once in the property, he made me false promises regarding the price of the property, the chance of getting a dryer, and a place to lock our bikes. He encouraged us to make an offer according to his false promises, which came back denied after almost a month! He then acted as if the offer was denied because we asked for unreasonable things, and was very threatening with regards with us losing the chance to ever secure the property. The entire process, with all its back and forth lies, took over 5 months. Chancellors rarely replied to our emails promptly, or picked up the phone. We were told many times that he wasn't in the office, so had to wait weeks for any information. After signing the contract, we weren't given any information at all for 3 weeks. We called repeatably and were told neither the relevant staff weren't in the office, but promised someone would call that day. No one called for 3 weeks. After all that time, we finally got a call from an agent apologising, for she had been on holiday. Minimum decency and respect would have required them to inform us, upon signing of the contract, that we wouldn't hear back for weeks. They were then very fast in demanding payment of the initial monies, even though per the contract this is only demanded three working days before the move in date, so that the money gets to the account on time. Everything was demanded of us, but we were shown no respect, consideration, or good faith. Moreover, we paid almost £4,000 in advance, including a ridiculous amount of £373 in fees for the worst service I ever received. Of these, £53 were hidden fees that the agent didn't reveal until the last possible opportunity, and were not mentioned in any of the documents we signed. Still, we were made to pay it. Lastly, in order to be given the keys by the check-in team on move-in day, we were given a business rate number to ring, which also costed us money. Chancellors has taken every opportunity to take money from us, while providing a disgraceful service. I feel that Chancellors treated us utterly disrespectfully, taking advantage of our status of students (of the University of Oxford). The process and dealing with the agents was an awfully stressful experience, and we wouldn't recommend this person or agency to my worst enemy. After posting a similar review on their website, Chancellors removed it. They then proceeded to ring me and claim that I was lying about everything. We have proof in emails so their accusation that we lied is demonstrably false. Please share this review so nobody else has to experience renting with Chancellors.

Please avoid at all costs!!!! Almost 6 months after moving out of a rented property we are still fighting to get part of our deposit back. We had to constantly chase for updates to find out what was going on, every time we called the person dealing with it was not in the office and apparently no one else was able to find out what the situation was! Here is a suggestion! Why don't you use some of the money you get from ridiculous admin fees to invest into some sort of software where employees can log and update all the ongoing cases so that anyone can pick it up and provide updates when needed?! All these delays meant that we went past the 3 months needed in order to log a claim with the TDS, a limitation we "conveniently" found out about after the deadline had passed! Words can't really describe the stress, frustration and amount of time we have wasted because of the way our end of tenancy has been dealt with. Utterly appalling!!!

Omg, boiler broke down on the coldest day of the year. I spoke to Sarah, Courtney and Danny the gas engineer and had the most fabulous customer service ever. Danny facetimed me (bless him- had had to look at my morning face) after Courtney called him out and explained the issue. Danny talked me through it and I fixed it in ten seconds instead of him having to come all the way out. I am so genuinely pleased with this service. Thanks for coming to work today.

Id like to thank our property manager Simon Butt for being so helpful every step of the way with our property. It is our first rented accomodation and the house was not ready when we moved in. Locks and windows did not work, the washing machine broke within a month and service men have been called out on around 4 seperate occasions but Simon was there with an answer as soon as we asked him for help and handled everything. If not for him then the whole sitation would have been so much more stressful but he was there replying to emails and calling repairmen as soon as we found a problem. Any problems were resolved within a week or two. Thank you for all your hard work, quick responses and for being a great support line for us!

Dear Chancellors team. we are extremely disappointed with the situation which resulted from your negligence. We moved in to an apartment managed by you with a car park run by a private company. You were supposed to provide us with a parking permit for a space in that car park (as it is included in the rent) but you have not. As the move in date was Friday afternoon and we had to wait until 7pm for the cleaning company hired by you, we could not contact you about that issue over the weekend. There was nowhere else to park outside the premise so we parked where I was supposed to and received two parking tickets on separate days as a result of that. I called you about that fact and it took you a week and a half to provide me with a replacement permit. We felt that it is unfair for us to pay the fine since we had the right to park there. First we appealed to the parking management company trying to explain the situation and highlighting the fact that I had the right to park from day one… without any luck. In this case we expect you to refund us a total of 120 pounds for the parking tickets as they were a result of your negligence. When presented with our position in a telephone conversation your answer was - “We are sorry for the resulting situation but there is nothing we can do about that. You will have to pay it yourself”, without even explaining why! We don’t feel that is right. It was your responsibility to ensure that we receive the permit on the day of our move in. When we called about it being missing you were not aware of that and explained that it seems that the previous tenants did not hand it in. To our knowledge the apartment was made vacant on the 16th of June giving you two weeks to become aware of the missing permit. In any case we expected a higher standard from a large and renowned company like Chancellors and certainly better customer service. We sincerely hope that you will reconsider your stance on this matter and improve our perception of your standards.

I've just had a successful letting with Chancellors in Sunningdate. I dealt mostly with Jenny Wintermeyer who was a pleasure to work with, friendly, polite and very well informed. Because we were pressed for time, they pulled out the stops to finish all the paperwork in very quick time and in a very professional manner. The team who answered the phone were also very polite and helpful, especially Kate and Lauren. [Sorry I didn't have the chance to speak with Fraser - I'm sure he would have been just as helpful.]

We went through 2 weeks of struggles to find a house to rent in Oxford until we met Jordan from Chancellors East Oxford, who showed us some light in our darkness. Jordan is friendly, full of smiles and listens to our concerns. During viewing, he allowed us to explore on our own while being around to answer our questions. He put forward our case in a very personalised way, he replied to emails and ensured we were well-informed of what to do next. In this situation, what else do you need except for one empathetic and responsive agent, right? My 5 star is for him.

Edited due to the experience we’ve had. Initially I thought the experience was good but once making contact with the landlord and having some conversations it’s an apparent that Chancellors use underhand tactics in order to artificially raise the rent or inflate their commission. When viewing the property and it was accepted we were ready and prepared to pay the deposit for the site, this was communicated to Chancellors. They stated that no deposit was required due to the no deposit scheme, we questioned whether this would have any impact on anything and they said it wouldn’t make any difference to us or the landlord. Fantastic we thought, and agreed. At the same Chancellors were having conversations with the landlord, saying that because we couldn’t pay the deposit, they should charge an extra £50 rent.. Over 3 years that’s £1800, during times of a housing and economic crisis, the morality of artificially inflating housing for their own personal benefit truly reflects the values of this company. If you can use anyone else, please do. Just a further note, all these reviews are artificially inflated as they request that you give a review during the sign up process which you feel obliged to given the demand for property.

Worst estate agency I’ve ever dealt with in the UK! Don’t let them fool you into the no deposit scheme. Jordan Gibbs makes out that there’s “absolutely no cost to you as a tenant” by not paying a deposit and then we found out through our landlord (!) who’d asked for considerably less rent per month, that she had been lied to by Jordan as he had stated we had requested not to pay a deposit which was completely false. It turns out by being fooled into the no deposit scheme, we are actually paying £50 more rent each month to cover this, while Jordan gets his commission for tricking us into the scheme. You should be ashamed of yourself. In addition, we were only allowed 5 minutes to view the property when first taking a look at the house due to “10 back to back viewings” and we were told there were multiple offers on the house when we put one in, so Jordan asked us to increase our offer of monthly rent if we wanted to ensure we got it which we weren’t comfortable in doing. We then later found out from our landlord once we’d secured the property that she was only told about three viewings that day and it was only us that put in an offer! Snide and scaremongering tactics by a cowboy estate agent making us pay more to benefit his own pocket and commission in a time of economic crisis. Absolutely disgusting - avoid at all costs. If I could give no stars, I would.

The estate agent did a great job in finding a place for us twice now. The first time we lived in a landlord-managed place, our new place is managed by Chancellors. After moving in, the Chancellors property managers are failing to address defects in the house in a timely manner. We've notified them of defects over 4 months ago, quotation were booked in the week after. After that they haven't given any clarity on whether or not they are going to act on the quotations and they reply to e-mails in an evading manner.
