Fantastic conveyancing experience with Thorntons

Selling in Glasgow, buying in Dundee - all our conveyancing was handled by Laura Franceschi and we really can't sing her praises highly enough. Very professional but also always very personable. Laura provided advice at each stage and always ensured we knew what was going on with both sides of our journey. Things got bumpy at a couple of points but Laura was always on hand to explain the legal position clearly and to support our decision making. Nothing ever seemed like too much trouble for her and the confidence in her throughout the process helped make this aspect of the move far less stressful than it could have been. We really can't thank her enough for her work.

Based on my experience, I highly recommend

I got in touch a year after an accident at work. I was hesitant to put a claim in as I still worked there, but the accident could have been avoided and left permanent scarring. Highly recommended

We used Thornton's law to carry out the conveyancing on a property purchase last year and to sell our house this year. I cannot recommend Sandy and Gillian highly enough. Mixed feelings about firm, but happy with employees

Just sold my house in the East Neuk of Fife, and am mostly pleased with the results even though there were some bumps along the way. I was an old customer of Pagan Osborne, which was acquired by Thorntons when it went under. I had good experiences with them making my will and selling a flat in Edinburgh, although I did not get the price we had hoped for. The same ended up happening with the house in the East Neuk I just sold. From what I understand, Thorntons have a reputation at least in the East Neuk for overvaluing properties. This house sale experience began in February, when I arranged a visit from Anna Morton, their property specialist for the East Neuk. She was very kind and professional, and suggested a higher price for my house than I had expected. As soon as we put the house on the market at the suggested price, we got a very high offer in literally one week. The interested buyers wanted the house for short term lease, which was not surprising since it was ideal for this purpose. I agreed that they could apply for the license before the house was sold, thinking that this was just a courtesy so that they would have it in time. No one at Thorntons told me that Fife Council was now getting much more serious about these licences, although Teresa Robertson (the conveyancing paralegal) did say on the phone that we would normally not allow entry to the property before the sale was complete. Six weeks later, having bought a plane ticket to leave the UK just after the proposed entry date, the buyers changed their mind when they realised the neighbours were opposed to another short term let. This was obviously not Thorntons fault, and I believed Audrey Black (who runs the local estate office) when she said that they were also completely taken by surprise. Nonetheless, I did and still do feel someone should have warned me about the new situation with licensing for short term lets. After that, I met with Audrey several times and she and the rest of the team did their best to help me sell the house quickly, which I did albeit at a much lower price. Teresa Robertson handled the conveyancing very professionally, and I would recommend her services as well as those of the other individuals mentioned in this review.In conclusion, I got the sense that the people working for Thorntons are good employees who are doing their best, but not without creating unrealistic expectations in customers. I suspect this has something to do with the business model of the firm as a whole, which is a bit too big and used to its dominant position in the Dundee-Fife area. The firm needs to understand that this position is not guaranteed, and that they need to behave more as a private business needing to retain customers, and less like a government bureaucracy people have no other choice than to use.

Great service for a complex transaction.

We have just completed a sale and two purchases through Thorntons Law Perth and were very impressed with the whole experience. The system in Scotland is very reliant on Solicitors and we felt well served throughout. All questions and comments from our side were quickly responded to and the process was kept moving by some proactive "chasing" of counterparty solicitors.On the land purchase, the deeds were quite complex and Katherine was able to process this quickly and efficiently.We would happily use Thorntons again for any future house moves or legal needs.

Would not go anywhere else

This is my second time working with Steven Drake from Thorntons -law and I wouldnt go with anyone else. Selling in England and moving to Scotland was made easy working with Steven, who was always there to help with any of the many queries that I had. I don’t know where to start. If I could give 0 stars I would. Near to the end of October 2023 my husband sadly passed away with terminal cancer which was a very upsetting and stressful time for myself and my daughter. I decided to go with Thorntons Law LLP in Dundee which started the process of probate. As time went on it was clear that probate with Thorntons Law LLP in Dundee regarding my late husband’s estate had overinflated figures in relation to the house, furniture and car etc. I disputed the costs of the overinflated figures with Thorntons Law LLP in Dundee but was just ignored by the Thorntons Solicitor. I then decided to leave Thornton Solicitors in Dundee and go elsewhere due to not being listened to and found the Thorntons Solicitor very impatient and did not listen to my side of the story. Thorntons Law LLP in Dundee have now overcharged me for the work they have completed regarding my late husband’s estate, especially the house which has been overestimated. When sending in a complaint to Client Relations at Thorntons Law LLP in Dundee the query was not resolved. When disputing the overcharged costs I was advised by Client Relations at Thornton Law LLP in Dundee that they would instruct their private client to send an invoice to my address. I have now changed my solicitor to assist me with my ordeal. I will never deal with any Thorntons Solicitors again.
