Get ready to be treated as a criminal!

So we have just rented a property for which the landlord has outsourced the initial checks to Martin & Co, Harborne. The process cannot have been more tedious and unbelievably difficult. If you want to be treated as a criminal then please go for them. The only time we have faced similar level of scrutiny was when we were visiting Moscow. The process outsourced by the landlord to them is further partially outsourced to the Rightmove. So we have been through employer references, passport checks and they wanted to see both of us partners face to face despite providing them all the necessary documentation. You have to go in person to do that after having gone through all the document checks and employer references etc. While you are busy trying to sort out your move with all the different issues to sort out, they make the process so difficult. Not only that, but on the day of the move while you are on your way from another city and things get delayed, they are unable to accept that you will meet them the next day with the passports etc. Instead, they call the landlord telling him not to hand over the keys. All this while you have got a van full of your stuff on the way to the property and there is some delay caused due to problems with loading your stuff at your initial residence. So you are on your way to meet the van at the property and are in a train and there is delay in your journey due to the train being late. While you worrying over the van arriving before you have reached there and are also extremely tired from all the packing and loading, they call you ordering you to meet them first to show them the documents before you can have the property. You tell them that you can bring the documents tomorrow since everything has been delayed like it can happen while sorting out any move but they refuse to listen. You ask them to call later since you are unable to hear them clearly (you are running after a train with a child and it is Birmingham New Street station which is quite busy and noisy at around 5 pm). Instead, they keep on calling you and harassing you while you are loaded on a jam packed train. They also call the landlord telling him not to hand over the keys to you (thanks for such a considerate act in the middle of all the chaos after having giving you a hell with documents check). We have rented properties for the past 15 years and have dealt with so many agencies but have never felt unnecessarily harassed and our lives intruded like this. To be treated like a criminal despite having provided all sorts of documents. Moving house is a headache and people have got busy lives. They along with Rightmove have acted like MI6 altogether.Like other estate agents, someone from their side should be present at the time of handover of keys and do it in person instead of asking people to go to their offices acting as if they are employing you or are a law enforcing agency. Even while doing a virtual tour at the start, the agent refused to show us the lawn saying that we can do it in person if we wanted. Pathetic way of dealing with tenants. Please avoid for your own sanity!

I'd love to personally commend Owen's smith's professionalism, great attitude to work and extra care in discharging his duties. We had a viewing session with him at a house in Edgbaston 2days ago, and he was really courteous and helpful. Though we haven't concluded on moving in to the house, his approach has made us(my family) more comfortable with his company. Every letting agent should be like Owen Smith.

TERRIBLE DO NOT USE THIS AGENCY

TERRIBLE! I’ve now been waiting nearly 3 weeks to receive my deposit after requesting it from the deposit protection scheme. My landlord has told them multiple times to send it and they still haven’t. You can never get any response through email from them and the person that is dealing with the property Cherry Mahon never responds to emails and is conveniently never In.I then spoke to someone on the phone Marie Littleford who told me on Friday around 11am she would sort it out and it should be done by then end of the day - if it wasn’t I was instructed to call back on the Saturday.It wasn’t done so I called back on Saturday and surprise surprise she wasn’t in, none of the managers were in so I now have to wait til Monday which will be exactly 3 weeks since I requested this because apparently no one can help me.Was also told it takes 28 days to get a deposit back which is not true, why would the DPS allow you to make a claim if you haven’t received it after 14 days?
