Right from the first time I went in to see Maria at the Walthamstow branch where she is the manager was very friendly, polite and professional, she came to value my property and left me to make my decision without any pressure.I decided that Douglas Allen would be best to market my property because of their professionalism, write up and photos, the house I had already seen online was also listed with them and I said to Maria right from the start that I had my heart set on that house.The house was going through probate but Maria kept me up to date with how that was proceeding, and said she would do all she could to get me that house, and she stuck to her word which i appreciate.As well as Maria, Ben and Scott, were also friendly and professional whenever I went into Douglas Allen and when they came to my house to do viewings. It was going so well until it wasn’t

It was going so well until it wasn’t. I signed the contract in November 2020 & once I had reviewed the estate agency costs & the legal fees. I was told I would also have to pay a refundable £25 deposit for the legal fees. The legal fees quoted on a Douglas Allen headed pamphlet was *£695 for a property selling at the price it did. The * referring to additional fees if it were leasehold etc. I was instead charged £775 basic, which I raised before completion & spent endless time ringing & chasing the branch staff about. Always being promised calls but aside from 1 instance which unfortunately went to voicemail I didn’t receive. I was told it could be resolved after completion & would not affect the completion & on the return of the branch manager that week it would all the resolved once & for all. The staff member working at the branch covering in her manager’s absence couldn’t grasp the situation & kept emailing my solicitor, confusing matters as it was Douglas Allen that quoted the fees & asked for the £25 deposit, rather than calling me back as promised by other staff, to discuss. She also had never heard of the £25 refundable fee. Thankfully despite no paperwork I was able to prove this transaction by contacting my bank & requesting the statement showing this payment. On the managers return I hoped it would all be wrapped up quickly. The manager has given me assurances & called when promised but now it has all gone dead. The manager has emailed twice this week asking if his managers have called me yet. Which they haven’t. There seems to be no way to contact customer services, only a central sales team. I have contacted the central sales team too, to escalate the situation & there is never a manager to hand. Any time you call the manager is in a meeting or out on a break. You are always told they will ask them to call you, it never happens though. Up until this point I had been impressed with Douglas Allen. Now, I wouldn’t use them ever again. It’s a headache no-one needs, less so when dealing with health issues, which the local branch are aware of. So disappointed.

Our house took 1 year and 2 months to complete and we were kept in the dark throughout by Douglas Allen - they were awful at getting back to us and when we did finally get in touch, we were constantly lied to or they made excuses. At one point we weren't even aware that the chain had broken and was being rebuilt! Mark is the most unprofessional and inept character I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with - Charlotte was just one of his puppets who I felt sorry for as she constantly had to cover for him. Jonjo was actually good at his job and he should be running the show there, not Mark! The 'sales progressor' acted more as a barrier to communication rather than an accelerator. I would never leave a property transaction in their hands - you'll get burnt! No doubt they'll respond to this blaming solicitors or the builders at the top of the chain - who i'm sure share some of the blame - but this doesn't excuse them from the unprofessional manner by which they conduct their business. Avoid!
