Unskilled staff, below poor service

I used Chestertons to help find and rent my current property and their service was below poor. They failed to prepare the property prior to our move in date, despite pushing the date back to ready the flat and when we arrived to a filthy flat they were completely offline and unresponsive. In addition they offered compensation that they were not entitled to offer then informed us we were wrong to be compensated. Horrific agents and I would never use them again nor recommend them to anyone else. If you are thinking of using Chestertons, please seriously reconsider.

Finding and securing a rented property

Trying to select and secure a rented property from an overseas location and without the ability to view, other than online, is fraught with difficulties and potential pitfalls. However, thanks to help from the team at Chestertons St Johns Wood at every step in the process, we managed to find a property that met all of our criteria and then went through the quite demanding process of identity and financial checks, eased by the help of Megan and Luana in particular. It was a friendly, efficient and first rate service from all at Chestertons.

Disgraceful!

It has been nine months since we moved into the flat, and we are still waiting for some maintenance, not to mention a refund for a storage that we had to pay back in September as the flat, precisely, wasn't ready. We have been through three different property managers, and still we are not getting the right service. Disgraceful!

Outrageously bad

Do you think paying £300 plus to change a fire alarm is reasonable? Do you believe you should be paying for the cleaning of a flat you don't own? Is two weeks a reasonable response time to answer an email? If you've answered YES to any of those questions, then Chesterton's is for you! This agency is so useless, so incompetent, and rips you off SO shamelessly, I'm shocked they have such a good rating. We used them as managers of our flat for nearly a year and deeply, deeply regret our decision. AVOID these incompetents at all costs!

Terrible agents and scammers

They are overpriced on fees (£400-600 average) and their staff is not trained, rude, and frankly lying through their teeth. I've been given a new property I had to pay £5000 as a first deposit on and they were unable to move me in on the agreed upon (on the contract) date, regardless of being responsible for it and frankly liable. I asked to be present on inventory, they ignore it. Once I move into the property, they tried to pin some repairs on me despite the fact I was not the one who damaged the property, having literally just moved in. Overall has been the worst experience of my life and I've been renting places in London for the past 10 years. DO NOT WORK WITH THEM

Worst experience in my life

Worst experience in my life. Unreliable and fraudulent. I took a short term let. After signing the contract and paying advance, they ask me for more money in addition, without a receipt. I send total payment in two payments because my bank did not allow me to make such a large transfer. I send both transfer copies in an official document with CRO. One payment arrives, the other one does not by the weekend. They do not give me the keys. My lawyer is getting me a full refund. Never go to scoundrels like them. Be careful.

The Chesterton's agent, Gian Carlo, who assisted me during the period that i needed to find a suitable flat to rent and move into, within the short and busy period, that i desired a move to another location in London, handled the entire process professionally, while proactively being instrumental to the whole process involved, from finding the choice location to signing the tenancy agreement and all other things related thereto. Gian Carlo provided me with the relevant information i needed to get the choice flat and location, he maintained communications, via calls and texts, ensuring he kept in touch when necessary, particularly, while i was navigating a busy work/life balance and readying to move flats and a new tenancy. That fact that there were no delays or mistakes in such a busy period is testament to the incredible work ethic and professionalism Gian Carlo displayed to a first time Chestertons customer as myself. I recommend similar services to anyone and everyone desirous of changing their location, whether via a property purchase or lettings, to first ask or search for Chestertons and afterwards request for Gian Carlo to handle it for you as he has done for me. :)

Horrible Experience of Chestertons in West London

I moved into a property in West London on 30th Jul 2022 that was rented and managed by Chestertons. The rental process was quite good, however the property management has been an awful, awful experience. We sent a snag list of around 12 issues on 4th Aug and now one month later not a single issue has been resolved - and this includes some serious issues like windows with no lock, leaking kitchen sink and a broken shower! They also guaranteed that the flat was properly cleaned prior to move in, however it was incredibly dirty and i had to pay for it to be properly professionally cleaned. Chestertons committed to providing invoices to prove that the flat was professionally cleaned however the invoices were never sent.They don't reply to emails, people go on vacation without any proper handover of the pending property management tasks, and escalations do not work. I have called and emailed now so many times, with no sign of a resolution to a single issue in sight. Landlords - if you want to have happy tenants, then do not use Chestertons for property management under any circumstances!! Stay well away.Update 25/09/2022: After a further 3 weeks from my review (7 weeks after initially submitting the snag list), not a single issue has been resolved. The situation is borderline ridiculous. A maintenance person visited the apartment to view and assess the snags. He mentioned that some items were very simple and he would fix there and then (e.g. the leaking kitchen sink would cost £1 to fix), however Chestertons told him NOT to fix it, as there was a process to be followed. Presumably this means a further several more weeks of waiting. I also received a concerned reply to this post from Chestertons saying that they will be reaching out to me so that they can investigate the issue. This never happened - unfortunately it was feigned concern, and i continue to struggle with the local property management team who don't respond to emails, don't answer phones, don't answer messages to call back, etc.

Rude and Unprofessional

The estate agent I dealt with was so rude and repeatedly asked if I could afford the flat before even viewing the flat. He assumed I had no knowledge of the current renting market and was very condescending when I told him my price range. When I turned up to my viewing, he dismissed me and didn't introduce the flat at all. I 100% do NOT recommend this place to anyone.

Living in London for the last nine years, it's fair to say that finding a new place to live is no easy task. When we recently needed to find temporary accommodation due to some renovations taking place in our current flat, we were pleasantly surprised by the great customer service received by one particular agent at Chestertons on Upper Street. We can't say enough great things about Nikki Humphreys. Nikki is a great listener and takes into account the small details that matter to people looking for a flat in this area. To say that she's professional is an understatement. She's a great letting agent who truly cares for her customers's needs and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to all the ins and outs of the properties that she's showing. We strongly recommend working with Nikki if you re looking for an agent who truly takes your search seriously and who can make your move-in time run smoothly.

We have dealt with Chesterton's for the last 10 years, selling, buying and letting. We have had our disagreements but in general we are pleased with the company, they mean well and try to sort out issues to the best of their abilities. We have just sold a house in a difficult market. It took a long time but agents persevered and secured a good buyer. Chesterton's tenants were always excellent people, so I guess if we need to buy or rent again we would not hesitate to give them a chance.
