Dexters…another third rate estate agent

We have bought and sold a number of properties over the last 30 plus years with differing experiences. None of these have been particularly positive. We hired Dexter’s in London Bridge in April 2024 as they seemed to come across from the outset as if they genuinely seemed to know what they were doing. Being at the top of the chain in central London with no property to buy, the process should have been relatively straightforward. After some initial viewings we received an offer within the first few days although we had noted the complete lack of agent knowledge during the viewing process as we heard the answers provided to viewers over our Ring security cameras. An example: viewer asked how old our 1920’s property was. Answer…late 1960’s, and so on. Basic stuff and quite astonishing !I negotiated the offer with the agent who seemed to think a significantly lower price to the one we had set might have been acceptable. Having made it clear it was not, we accepted pretty much what we were asking for in the first place. I should not have needed to have held that conversation. As is the way in England & Wales a buyer can pull out of the process at any time leading up to exchange. Needless to say that after 6 weeks of engaging with solicitors and getting everything ready, our buyers pulled out of the sale with no reason given. We believe they couldn’t get their mortgage agreed and had not been vetted properly by Dexters. They didn’t agree of course. We accepted another offer 2 weeks later, in June. The buyers had their leasehold property under offer. The next few months were painful to say the least. Our solicitors did all the work and were extremely responsive, going above and beyond chasing the buyers solicitors who in turn chased at the bottom of the chain. The leasehold nature of our buyers property made things needlessly complicated with their buyers solicitors taking an eternity to get anything done. This was not helped by the shockingly poor leasehold management company being involved, L&Q. Our buyers were as equally frustrated as we were, having got everything into place on their side and wanted to be in no later than September as they was expecting their first baby that month. Notwithstanding this, throughout the whole process we were never kept updated by Dexters. We constantly had to chase them and they seemed to have entirely forgotten that we were their clients. Out fixed rate mortgage deal expired during this process resulting in significant additional mortgage cost plus paying double fees to our solicitors due to the first sale falling through. The silence from Dexter’s was appalling. It is high time estate agents were required to be both professionally qualified and licensed. It seemed to us that paying the estate agents (for doing very little) more than 3 times the amount of our solicitors not only grossly unfair but inequitable and nonsensical !Our solicitor did all the work, the agents didn’t appear to give a damn. After more than 6 months from the time our property went on the market, we finally completed in early October and we hope our buyers have recovered from an unnecessarily convoluted and stressful experience. So much for a “straightforward process”. Dexters “client service” was singularly absent. We would not recommend them to anyone.

Recently moved out of a Dexters property - very satisfied

I recently came off a lease contract for a property managed by Dexters. In the UK, the service you get as a renter is oftentimes sub-par, however, Dexters in my experience is a remarkable exception. Even though I was "just" a renter of a relatively low-cost property, I was treated respectfully by Dexters staff, and if there were disagreements, i.e. when it came to the deposit reimbursement, they did everything to resolve the issue quickly and satisfactory. I want to especially mention Monika, who was my primary contact for property management, and Paul, who was the letting agent. Both did their utmost to make the often unpleasant realities of renting in London much more enjoyable.

Let down by poor communication within the company

Unfortunately we were let down by this letting agent yesterday. We had a 6pm viewing for a house in Hayes, I drove 1h in rush hour traffic to visit the property and on arriving I was met by the agent who informed me that the locks had been changed that day and his key did not work, so we could not access the property.He was very apologetic and I understand he was also frustrated as he himself had spent 45 minutes travelling to the property.He did offer to rearrange a viewing but I was so disappointed in the lack of organisation (how can it be that locks are changed and the letting agent/property managers are not informed?) and frustrated at the waste of my time and petrol (2 hours round trip) that I will not be using this company going forwards.I would have left 1 star but the letting agent was truly apologetic and did remain professional in the situation.

Dexters Putney gave us a flat with many problems...we are very disappointed and frustrated because we pay rent but they do not fix the various problems. We have to call several property managers and they promised us that they would fix the problem as soon as possible but they always try to buy time...and then we have to send several emails and phone calls asking for an update on when they will fix the various problems...but they always say that it will be fixed this week...but it is not true we have been living without basic things for two months.the first day the boiler did not work as well as the oven the curtains were broken...so we had to wait a long time to have the boiler fixed and the oven changed.the washing machine has been leaking for 1 month, since we moved in the lights in the bedrooms do not work nor the radiators in the bathrooms...check the flat carefully before signing the contract with Dexeters

10/10 for effort at business winning 0/10 for performance!…

We were badgered by Dexter’s for years so decided last summer to instruct them on a letting. They over promised on the rent they could achieve so we missed the window to secure tenants before the autumn. We also then instructed them to sell as we were receiving no rent . They failed to produce a single credible offer on either basis. We instructed Goldschmidts who found a buyer and at a strong price within a matter of weeks. I’m prompted to write today as we received probably the third cold call from Dexters as the old property is now for rent via the new owners . We told Dexters on at least 2 previous occasions that we had sold the property so I wish they could be more efficient/ professional in all they do.
