Initially I was impressed by some great work from James Somner, who quickly lined up some great viewings for a HNWI client I introduced to Sotheby's. Upon declaring his interest in two properties, my client was told that neither landlord would be willing to sign a contract for less than 12 months - despite pre-empting the fact that we needed a 6 month break clause in the contract from the outset. As things became time sensitive, we decided to make an offer on a property above the asking price to conclude the deal, paying well over market value. Upon moving into the property, it was clear that Sotheby's did not carry out an inspection of the property. The A/C (and heating) was not working (critical for Middle Eastern market), and they failed to inform us that the block of apartments required a signal booster to be retrospectively fitted to the apartment to get a mobile phone signal. We were even asked to pay 50% of the cost to have this installed. For phone signal?! Sotheby's claimed they were unaware of such faults. It seemed to be common knowledge within the building, which we sadly only found out upon moving in. As an introducer, I would be wary of working with Sotheby's in future. Despite their proactive salespeople, they are lacking the due diligence when taking on new instructions and their accounts department (Aamir) have been sat on my unpaid invoice for almost 6 weeks and counting, despite my constant chasers.
