Disappointed with Sotheby’s handling of…

Disappointed with Sotheby’s handling of my complaint in 2026 This review concerns my experience of communicating with Sotheby’s in 2026 about a longstanding complaint. On 14 August 2026, I emailed the company again in an attempt to move the matter forward. As of 14 September 2026, I have not received an email reply to that message. My experience of seeking a resolution this year, including through Sotheby’s legal department, has been deeply disappointing. There has been correspondence, and I acknowledge that Sotheby’s has provided explanations. However, those exchanges have not addressed my concerns to my satisfaction. At times, I have felt that my frustration was being acknowledged rather than the substance of my questions being answered. To me, the process has felt like hitting a wall: polite language, but no satisfactory way forward. The background explains why these recent communications matter to me. In 2009, my husband and I purchased an artwork through Sotheby’s, presented under the name of Alex Katz. We relied on its catalogue description and specialist expertise. Years later, Sotheby’s accepted the same work for another auction. On 11 February 2020, the evening before the scheduled sale, it emailed me explaining that the work was being withdrawn. Sotheby’s said the artist’s studio did not recognise it as a work by the artist and had requested its withdrawal, meaning Sotheby’s could not offer it under its guarantee on that basis. Sotheby’s also explained that relevant catalogue information and its relationship with the studio post-dated our purchase. I understand that new information can emerge. Nevertheless, I had purchased the work through Sotheby’s, and Sotheby’s subsequently told me it could not offer it for resale under the same artist’s name. Are we serious??? why is this happening to me? that a work that today would worth around 200k. I am in total shock. That is why I have continued seeking clarification about the checks undertaken, the information supporting that position and a satisfactory resolution. . I am describing my experience of seeking assistance when questions arose about a work purchased through the same auction house. I was looking for answers and a constructive way forward, not simply acknowledgement that the situation was frustrating. My recent experience has left me disappointed with the communication and follow-through. On 14 August 2026, I emailed the company again in an attempt to move the matter forward. I had the pleasure of working with Olivia from Sotheby' on a recent rental house search in K&C. She's been exceptional through the process, really did her best to get us the house we wanted. Ultimately, it did not work because they decided to sell it, but the professionalism and the customer experience was highly appreciated.

Renting our flat through Sotheby’s was by far the best and most efficient rental process I’ve experienced in London. Everything was made incredibly easy and quick from start to finish. A special thank you to Olivia Conway, who was absolutely fantastic throughout. She was always available, incredibly helpful, kind, and professional, she made the whole experience smooth and stress-free. If you’re looking to rent in London, I couldn’t recommend Sotheby’s and Olivia more highly!

I want to take a moment to highlight the conduct of MARCUS O’BRIEN, Head of Family Office, Consultant. There are serious concerns about the way he treats people, including behavior that has been experienced as racially insensitive and, at times, abusive. This is not just about one incident, it raises broader questions about accountability and the culture being allowed to exist. When someone in a senior position behaves this way, it inevitably reflects on the wider business environment. It makes you wonder what standards are actually being upheld, and what other issues may be going unaddressed behind the scenes. This isn’t something that should be ignored.

Becky and the Sotherby's team recently helped me to sell my apartment for a good price in a very difficult market. The quality of service was excellent, and I would particularly highlight the high quality communications. There were also times when the solicitors were going head to head that Becky played an invaluable role in guiding all parties to a workable solution. I am normally sceptical of the fee structure that all estate agents use (% of sales value) which seems to penalise those with high quality, well presented and expensive properties. That said, I would say that Becky truly deserved her fee. There are less expensive estate agents than Sotherby's but my overarching view is that I experienced value for money. I would highly recommend.

I have had the pleasure of working with Darcy Hunt and Will Pitt at Sotheby's. Both were superb to work with and during a very tight timeframe to exchange contracts were instrumental in achieving a successful outcome for both parties. Real tenacity, team work and sensitivity was needed, and both Darcy and Will were brilliant. The sellers were delighted and no hesitation in recommending them both, and the Sotheby's London team.

Polina accompanied us through the process of buying a property under construction in London. Polina was service-oriented, professional and attentive to every question and need that arose even after signing the purchase agreement and until the actual delivery of the property. It was a pleasure to work with her.
