Rightmove, What Have You Done?

In respect of your new layout I totally agree with every comment other people have fed back to you. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the previous layout. I always use the picture enlarger and zoom facility on the floorplans and like to have the map and pictures viewable on the same screen but this isn't possible anymore. When using the new layout on my mobile in landscape mode half the picture is missing, lost to banners at the top and bottom of the screen. I have searched all over your website to see how it can be reverted back to the previous layout with no joy. Can this be done? If not can you please give us the choice or revert it back to how it was. I have been using Rightmove for many years and through personnel and business use I have viewed many properties in the UK and Europe via your website and purchased, rented and offered for rent many properties too. I don't really feel your competitors have been able to compete with you until now and I for one will wait to see what you do but will also try out the competition to make my life easier.

Very Professional

Having read some really poor reviews on Van Mildert, I was incredibly apprehensive when my partner and I were being referenced for a rental application through them. I thought after so many bad reviews it would be fair to balance the feedback with a good review! Everyone I dealt with at Van Mildert was efficient and polite. The feedback from my employer and personal referee regarding VM was also good. The referencing was done quickly and professionally and was not "invasive" as had been claimed by previous reviews. I would have no hesitation in recommending Van Mildert.

Prolonging the process with their mistakes

Van Mildert is doing reference check for us as a tenant. It is three days that a lady calls us at 5 pm and asks to sign and send landlord consent form which I do everyday. Every time I ask her call me back if you don't receive it within two minutes or confirm by email if you get it. Nothing happens and she calls me again next day at 5 pm for the same request. No problem, so far! After three days and sending what they asked for three times, I called them in the next morning and asked if they got it, and they told me yes, we received your email. However, someone again called at 5 pm and said: please send us the signed form. Please be in tune with each other. You are making this process long and waste our time!

Hi Ali,Thank you for leaving us a review of what you are going through while being referenced - this doesn't sound ideal at all. I've passed this on to our head of referencing, so will be able to investigate this further. In the meantime, could you please reach out to me via customerservice@vanmildert.net with some more information? Our service level is incredibly important to us and where there are instances of this not being as streamlined as we aim for, we aim to investigate this and provide further training where we can to ensure it doesn't happen again - having some more information from you will be very helpful in allowing us to get to the bottom of this.Kind regards,Van Mildert.

Useless

Useless. Sent off all the information required and following had daily emails from them. They were not polite. And kept ringing me. My colleague at work also replied and sent them the information they needed. There seems to be a serious problem with lack of trust. Despite being in employment as a Junior Doctor and filling all the information as required. Asked for payment slips from work and further information. I am still not sure I will be able to move into the property as planned. This referencing company causes massive delays for both landlords and tenants, preventing prospective tenants from being able to move in and delaying landlords from receiving rent. Causes stress for tenants and the potential for their relationships to break down, meaning that people may not even want to move in with each other after using this referencing company. I think for any landlord and estate agent this is a waste of money and would suggest meeting your tenants or going directly through the estate agent. I would not recommend such a system that perpetuates lack of trust between people as may cause serious harm to individuals and their relationships. Because we may not move in at the date initially suggested by the landlord, we may now have to look at moving into another property. I think they need to wake up to the level of harm that they can cause to individuals and be polite and generally everyone should be more trusting! Companies like this are trying to make money off lack of trust a lack of kindness and compassion. In an ideal world there would be no need for these types of company. I hope that others who have had a bad experience are ok- I am sure I am not the only one to have a bad experience here! Overall causes more harm than good and in my opinion companies like this should be illegal.

Hi Tom,I’m sorry to hear that you are having a negative experience while being referenced by ourselves. We record all of our calls and our referencing email inbox is monitored by our head of referencing and team leaders to ensure our referencing team are representing our company values and supporting applicants through the process appropriately. If this is not the case, these interactions will be flagged and dealt with accordingly.I am also very sorry to hear you are finding the experience stressful, and that your relationship is being impacted. This is, of course, not our attention at all! We are not aiming to create or perpetuate any form of mistrust between you or your potential landlord (or your partner!). Tenant referencing is a requirement in the UK to ensure that people renting a property can afford the rental amount (which is why we perform credit and affordability checks) and are likely to pay the rent on time, every month (which is why we request employer and previous landlord references where applicable). I’ve been referenced by companies in the past (not by Van Mildert) and it is stressful; when you want a property and envision moving into your dream home with someone you love, it’s stressful when you feel that rug may be pulled out from under you by people you don’t know. In the past I have felt exactly the way you feel now.But I can assure you that it is not our intention to either fail tenants, stop them from moving into their dream home or perpetuate mistrust. It’s definitely not our intention to cause tension between applicants wanting to move into a home together and I sincerely hope that you and your partner are destressed and blissful again soon!I’ll catch up with our referencing team today to discuss the delays you mentioned. On average, our referencing takes between one and two days, but can take longer if we need more information or further checks need to be carried out. Please email customerservice@vanmildert.net with your full name and the proposed property you’re applying for and we will be able to help get this moving in the right direction. Kind regards,The Van Mildert Team

Fraud report - Great customer service

I contacted Rightmove to warn about a fraudster that illegally sublets a double bedroom in the flat he rents himself in Carville, Durham. I was very pleased to hear that only a registered Estate or Letting Agent and a member of a Governing Body or Redress Scheme can advertise on Rightmove. This will certainly reassure me when looking for properties on Rightmove in the future. Thank you to Jamie Bolt (Consumer Experience Specialist) for their quick and reassuring reply. They were very sympathetic about our situation.

They allow fraudulent adverts to be advertised

Careful with them. They allow agents to post fraudulent pictures stolen from other flats to rent theirs, in occasions hilarious attempts to defraud renters like posting in a ground flat pictures of a flat with balconies and great views.

My experience with Taylors agency in Watford is being a nightmare! We did the check out on July 2019 and three month later, we do not have any response regarding the deposit refund. We have initiated the alternative dispute resolution (ADR). We consider unacceptable how Taylors is managing all the process with a lack of communication and when it happens, is completely contradictory. We strongly trusted and collaborated with the agency during the three years that we lived in the property and we never suspected that Taylor went to respond unprofessionally.

Me and my wife just bought a house and Charlie helped me find the house that we wanted. He guided us thru the whole process. John was also fantastic by helping us to secure a mortgage. Would definitely recommend Taylors Estate Agents and will always be my top priority if i ever sell and move on to a new house. P.S. We had our 2nd son whilst waiting for the completion date and on the day the i got the key they gave us a bouquet of flowers and a wine to enjoy. Thank you Taylors!

What a journey! We used Taylors during 2019 after falling in love with a house that they had on their books. From day one, each member of the team that we met treated us with a warm welcome, respect and support. We were so impressed, that we asked them to sell our house, and also used their in-house mortgage broker. By doing this, we saved money, and, were not required to mediate between various people / roles that come with house purchases and sales. They worked as a team, keeping a positive attitude throughout. We were well looked after by Ray, Jack, John, Ben, and Charlie. We had to reduce the price of our property during the sale process due to a minor slump in the local market and Taylors were not pushy at all, but suggested the best way to move forward quickly. To add to our journey, we also gave birth to our 3rd child during the house purchase process and received a lovely bouquet of Flowers and a bottle of Alcohol, a lovely gesture from the Taylors team. There was a great competitive vibe within the team to get our house sold and it was clear they were genuinely rooting for us to have a smooth and successful purchase. Viewings were professional, and well organised, and communication was regular and always positive. Any problems we encountered were always met with a solution or a plan of action. We would be happy to recommend Taylors, and even use again ourselves if the need arose. Thanks guys!

Great Support and a Personal Touch

We've been working with Rightmove for a few months now, and overall, the experience has been fantastic. As a small, women-owned business, we've found their product to be user-friendly and effective, and their academy resources have been incredibly helpful.A special shoutout goes to our Customer Success Executive, Megan, who has truly gone above and beyond for us. From the very beginning, Megan's personal and proactive approach has made all the difference. She's always on hand to help us set up and maximise the platform's potential, and she feels like an extension of our own team at times.Thank you, Megan, and the Rightmove team, for your support, we look forward to continuing to work together!Ania and Olivia, Empowered Edge Properties

I am relocating

I am relocating, and Rightmove at first appears to be a great asset and a very useful tool.sadly, i am losing the will to live trying to use it to identify suitable properties to travel to view. i have had enough wasted journeys already.the big problem is that the location markers on the satellite maps are very rarely correct. many point to the middle of a field or to a house that does not match the shape of the house in the photographs.the first thing i want to know about any property that has an initial interest is where is the house and how does it lie in relation to neighbours and the rest of the environment. so, a correct location marker is vital. that means i need to call the agent before i can even shortlist or reject property. the person who answers is often unable to identify the correct location, so that every enquiry results in a frustrating ping-pong of messages and calls between myself and the agent before the question is resolved.when i spoke to Rightmove by phone, they said that the agents were too lazy to sort out this issue because they use different software. when i speak to agents they tell me that Rightmove systems relocate the agents' correct position markers to the centre of the postcode. it is the 21st century. i wish they would sort it out between them. it is so widespread that i wonder if it is deliberate to generate telephone contacts. and why are railway lines missing from maps, and motorways so faint that they appear almost as minor roads.

Terry · 26 February 2020

Agent replied · 17 June 2024

Hi Terry,Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear of the difficulty you've had when checking a properties location. You're absolutely right, all properties on our website are uploaded and managed by the Estate Agent themselves, it's not something we do for them at all. Each agent will use their own systems to upload their properties and there is a large amount of third party providers for these systems so each one is different. In a property upload, GPS co-ordinates are provided for the property location. Some systems will provide the co-ordinates for the centre of the property postcode and others will pin point the specific property. If the latitude and longitude co-ordinates are incorrect, this will affect where the pin shows on the map for the listing. Only the advertising agent or, their third party system provider has access to change these co-ordinates. We don't have access to an agents systems and don't have the authority to go into an agents listings and make any changes without their consent. We appreciate the impact incorrect co-ordinates can have on a property listing and encourage all our member agents to check these details when uploading a property. What you see on a property listing is what we've received in the Estate Agents upload from their systems. We're not involved in the valuation process of a property and wouldn't know it's exact location to be able to make this change on an advert. We advise to use the map and street view feature on a property listing as a guide for the area that the property is located in and for confirmation on the exact location, to contact the advertising agent. Many Thanks,Rightmove

I feel compelled to review Rightmove…

I feel compelled to review Rightmove after their near immediate response to my request for help via their customer contact email address. I say near as I had to send 2 emails before anything was done, but at least the action was immediate upon re-sending my request. This is in complete contrast to my experience with Zoopla who still have not given an adequate response to my complaint some 2 months after I first raise it and after some emails from them that suggest they are both ignoring my actual complaint and also are seemingly trying to cover up something strange occurring on their website. I wish I could influence my estate agent to change their marketing policies based upon my experiences, but in the meanwhile I wish to thanks Rightmove for their probable realisation that it is the home owner that in effect pays for their existence even if income is generated via estate agents and other commercial bodies.

Dishonest practices. A lot of reductions are not real reductions

I have informed Rightmove several times that dishonest practices are used on their website and their data quality team has done absolutely nothing about it. As seen in previous reviews, I also have informed them that I frequently see estate agents list properties as reduced, but actually list the original price again and sometimes againand again. Or they reduce marginally once and then list the first reduction price again and again as a new reduction, but the price never changes. The third practice is to get rid of the original date by de-listing and then re-listing so as to not show how long the property has really been on the market. That is helping fraud. I understand that most estate agent are very dishonest, but Rightmove should not support it.As Rightmove doesn't seem to care I would not recommend using this website. THE REPLY BELOW IS NOT TRUE. THEY SAY IT EVERY TIME AND IT KEEPS HAPPENING. THE ESTATE AGENTS MIGHT HAVE JUST FOUND A WAY AT MANIPULATING THE SITE. MAYBE. BUT THEN THE RIGHTMOVE SHOULD NOT JUST RELY THAT THEIR EXISTING CONTROL SYSTEM IS WORKING. USERS PAY ATTENTION AND REPORT IT WHEN YOU SEE IT.

Customer · 31 December 2019

Agent replied · 17 June 2024

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to update our review. Our Data Quality team investigate all properties that have had what we call a rapid price reduction. It is something that is taken seriously by the team, and each property raised with them is looked into individually with the processes that they have in place. Where needed, appropriate action will be taken for the properties that are showing incorrectly on Rightmove and we encourage home hunters to send us over an examples they come across. A property will show as reduced once it has had a 2% price reduction, the full property details will show the date the property was very first listed, and the reduction will show within the search results. When a property is taken of the market, and then re-listed onto Rightmove, it will only show the new date if the property has been of the market for 14 weeks or more. This is a rule we are very strict with, to ensure that properties are not removed for a small amount of time, to just be sent back out in property alerts and also show as new. We currently are working on improving the processes we have in place to try and help with this. As well as our specialist team currently working on new systems to pick up on more of the Data Quality issues, and reduce the amount that are not picked up.Many thanks, Rightmove.

What they can do with your data

First contact with me was by SMS and mail as a guarantor. I looked them up They're a fast growing £2.8 million company They were asking for personal data far beyond the necessary for a credit check . So I checked them out .Their GDPR policy is full of concerns Such as"We do collect special categories of personal data about you (this includes details about your race or ethnicity, religious or philosophical beliefs, sex life, sexual orientation, political opinions, trade union membership, information about your health and genetic and biometric data) criminal conviction and offences.""We will only use your personal data for the purposes for which we collected it, unless we reasonably consider that we need to use it for another reason and that reason is compatible with the originalpurpose.""We may have to share your personal data with the parties set out below for the purposes set out inthe table in paragraph 2 above.• Third parties to whom we may choose to sell, transfer, or merge parts of our business or our assets. Alternatively, we may seek to acquire other businesses or merge with them. If a changehappens to our business, then the new owners may use your personal data in the same way asset out in this privacy notice." Please check the document and the list out yourself as to who can access it . Look at their web page and access their own privacy policy Data is an asset so effectively they reserve the right to sell you on.Sorry but the level of data they are requesting is far too intrusive and I have multiple concerns over how they use it and who else will get it . Scam's often start with obtaining this depth of data. Your choice of using them, I cannot reflect on their service as I never got past the first stage as I had to stop my dealings with them before I started really ,ironically after having reviewed their own policy. I was only a guarantor after all. I know it's a bore but when you look at the policies of some of these services you find that you are potentially at risk of your data self being bought and sold. You have to find that out for yourself.

Rightmove needs a lot of improvements to reach minimum standards of a property ad website

There is no option to sort the listing according sq meter/price. So, the properties can be sorted cheapest per area, not just rooms, houses and flats. Also, is unacceptable from the agencies that they don't provide council tax (is their job to look for it) as we want again to sort the properties as per total price. Also, we need to leave feedback about properties or agencies because most of them are rude and keep trying to get peoples' money.

This is a feature we have available on our commercial side, but not the residential side of our website. I will ensure this feedback is passed over to our development teams, so they understand how useful a feature like this would be.We do encourage our estate agency customers to include all information that a potential tenant or purchaser would like to see. If you search via our website rather than our app, there is a feature that appears on each property called 'spotted an error'. It allows you to send feedback directly over to the agents that are advertising the property. Rightmove has been informed about…

Rightmove has been informed about properties coming off the market for a day or two just to return at the original price as reduced. This is to get rid of original date so as to not show how long the property has been on the market. Rightmove agreed that this was poor practice and told me they would get in touch with agents but did nothing.I have also noticed that certain retirement properties that sold at a big discount were not shown on sold properties where other similar properties were being advertised at much higher prices because the agents were obviously concerned that the low priced sold properties would be used as a bargaining chip.I feel that rightmove should insist on more transparency in these cases.

Like pretty much everyone else, my experience of Van Mildert was HORRENDOUS.My partner and I were coming to the end of a tenancy on a student flat and so had been viewing new places. We'd done some reading about the process and seen online that referencing shouldn't take more than a few days, so this wasn't something we were worried about as we had close to a month. Having found a flat we liked and paid a £127 holding deposit for referencing to take place we then heard NOTHING for two weeks, when they phoned me but never bothered answering on my multiple attempts to call back, or respond to my emails. We had to ask the letting agent to find out what the issue was - turns out Van Mildert were waiting for a reference from our current landlord that they'd never even requested! They wanted one for each of us, but had only bothered to ask for a reference from my partner, and then tried to pin the blame on our landlord. Having finally dealt with that, approaching three weeks into the process, they informed me that they needed evidence of my savings. This is all fine but I have no idea why they were incapable of asking for this sooner, considering they don't exactly seem to be doing much at all. Moving out day came and went and we ended up spending over a week in someone's spare room/on a sofa because we had nowhere else to go. We'd planned to order furniture and set up internet and utilities before we moved out of our other flat so we'd have a somewhat liveable place, but that couldn't happen since we didn't know if we'd ACTUALLY have somewhere to live. In short - absolutely incompetent and lazy, and left us in a horribly uncertain situation for over a week where we had no place to call home. No regard for prospective tenants whatsoever, and I can't imagine the landlord was too pleased to have lost a month's rent she otherwise could have had either! I'm only giving them a single star because I have to - if I could, it'd be a zero. Letting agents of the world, please, for the sake of your tenants AND your landlords, avoid them.
