DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PROPERTY ALONE WITH THEM, I entrusted John Payne with access to my vacant apartment for a SINGLE viewing, the apartment CCTV confirms that the agent, Nathan, and the prospective viewer were the only people to enter the property during the relevant period. When I returned to the apartment over a month later, I discovered that someone had used my private toilet, defecated in it and DID NOT FLUSH. This was particularly unnecessary given that there are toilet facilities available on the ground floor at reception. Either a viewer was permitted to use the private facilities and the property was not properly checked afterwards, or the agent himself used them and failed to inform me of what had been left behind. Either possibility is completely unacceptable when an estate agent has been entrusted with access to someone's property. What disappointed me further was how the matter was handled afterwards. After I withdrew the property from the market, I was warned that I “may still be liable to pay us a fee in the future”. I asked for clarification TWICE of exactly what they meant by the “term of our agency agreement”. A month later, I have yet to receive a response. I had originally intended to deal with the toilet incident privately rather than leave a public review. But after having my emails go unanswered for weeks, I decided that other property owners should be aware of my experience. If you entrust an estate agent with the keys to an empty property, you should be able to expect it to be treated respectfully, properly checked after a viewing, and for any incident to be communicated to you.
