Smooth and seamless flat move with Suzannah.

Absolutely wonderful experience moving home with Rettie. Myself and my partner must absolutely tip our hats to Suzannah who ensured we had a seamless process getting moved in. Simply appalling - avoid this agent unless you’re desperate !!

Rettie & Co are simply appalling. We rented accommodation for a whole year from them, the day we got the keys the apartment was absolutely filthy, truly disgusting , the windows were gross and had mould on the frames, the bed had broken glass as well as fingernail or toenail cuttings underneath it, food wrappers and all types of debris which we had to clean in one day whilst taking our student daughter to move in 5 hours from our home. I called Rettie and had taken photos as evidence, they weren’t in the slightest bit interested, only interested in money. The kitchen cupboards had not been cleared out and they were disgustingly greasy and dirty, so we lost an entire cupboard having to store someone else’s items (the previous tenant left all their pots and pans behind and didn’t clean so for a whole year there was a huge cupboard on the landing that could have been used that was storing previous tennants stuff), there were mouse traps everywhere and the entire year was spent suffering the mice that caused no end of distress, Michael Logan from Rettie wasn’t interested in the mice or the health hazard this posed despite a student doctor working in a hospital living there. January came and with no warning scaffolding was put outside the apartment and men were coming in and out of an all female flat with no prior announcement. This was very distressing as workmen were entering their bedrooms unannounced. The scaffolding stayed outside their bedroom windows for five months with workmen walking past their bedrooms so they were unable to open their shutters to let the daylight in. At every point of there being an issue, Rettie were contacted but they could not have been more indifferent, didn’t care, made glib comments. I called them and to me the guarantor (middle aged parent) they were rude and condescending, is this the business culture of Edinburgh?

Good experience as buyers; poor as tenants

We had a mixed experiences with Rettie's in Edinburgh. As tenants, we were unlucky with the specific property manager we had to deal with. She was a poor communicator, often not replying to emails for several weeks and ignoring phone calls. When taking on the property, the previous tenants had put tar on the basement windows. She was aware of this and the property was vacant for 6 weeks before we moved in. Yet, she failed to arrange for these works to be done in time for our move-in date which meant we couldn't use the basement floor for several weeks at the beginning of our tenancy. Other matters we reported on moving in didn't get fixed until close to the end of our tenancy two years later. She also failed to let us know about months-long scaffolding and roofing work that was planned for the property - we found out when scaffolders turned up in our private garden one day. We didn't receive an apology for this. There were some matters she dealt with effectively: a leak in our kitchen sink, a replacement oven and offering support when our boiler broke. However, when we ended the tenancy, she stopped responding to communication around the return of our deposit and this had to be handled by a colleague.In contrast, when looking to buy, we had a great experience with Maz Purdie in the sales team, who was friendly, responsive and organised and helped us to find a great flat. We would highly recommend Maz to others looking to buy in Edinburgh.

Choose another agent

After being a perfect tenant for three and a half years I got sent a 54 page document about “ faults “ on leaving our tenancy , things like a mark in the carpet where the bed was etc , I cleaned the house within an inch of my life but they went round it with a ruler and took photos, I had several slight marks and an excessive amount taken from my deposit to cover silly little finger prints. I had also cleaned the close within an inch of its life as Rettie ignored all emails regarding people dumping rubbish , I left the flat and the close in a better state than I found it , this is what puts people off renting ! Please choose another agent as they do not deal with issues correctly and choosing to ignore emails for months.

Do not trust Rettie

We were double-crossed on a potential property purchase in Berwick-upon-Tweed. We put in an almost full-price offer on an expensive (for Berwick) house, and were told that the vendors were inclined to accept our offer. Just a few days before we were set to agree on terms, we were informed that another potential buyer had cropped up and that the vendors felt obliged to show them the house. We were surprised, but asked if we could make a counter offer if these new potential buyers ended up making an offer. We were assured that we could. All of a sudden, we were told that the new buyers had made an offer that had already been accepted and that the vendors would not, after all, entertain a counter offer from us. Either the listing agent was incompetent and badly informed, or the fix was in and the agent and vendors had already decided to sell the property to the other buyers. I would never recommend that anyone I know do business with Rettie, and obviously I never will do business with them again.
