Excessively slow and hard to contact.

I choose these solicitors on recommendation from my mortgage provider, but now wish I hadn't. My solicitor is Letaye, and they have been extremely slow with responding to enquiry's and progressing the sale. I am currently 6 months into a sale where there is no chain on either side, with no major issues. Progress only seems to be made after I question why things are happening, and certain enquiries have only been made 4 to 5 months into the sale which should have been made at the start. Both me and the sellers solicitors have had issues in receiving responses from the solicitor. This will likely lead to more fees due to the expiry of my original mortgage offer. In addition to this, there have been multiple times where the solicitor is on holiday for extended periods of time, and instead of being covered for, all progress has stopped, further slowing the sale. I would highly recommend using a different solicitor.

They are not as good as you may think them to be

I decided to go ahead with this company as they sold quite a few flats in my block . I thought they seem to be doing something right and decided to go ahead with them despite them charging way more than other estate agents. The very first meeting with their agent I was told they have access to pool of investors and hence they are different. When my flat went to market it had a measly 4 or 5 views. Some one decided to put in an offer that I was advised to accept which I did only to find he retracted and withdrew leaving me high n dry. The flat was back in the market again second time and I was forced to sell it to the guy who offered me home report value. The whole process took me 4 month. They promised me in the beginning that I would be likely to get at least 20K more than the home report and hence went ahead but found out that they had no investors or anyone else that they mentioned they have access to. Don't believe them when they present themselves as somehow better than other estate agents. i sold my flat at a home report value and it took them 4 months to complete the sale and they did not waive or reduce their commission by a Pence despite the delay . This company is all smoke and mirrors. Don't fall for them , they are not what they claim to be .

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!This is the worst company any one dealing with the sale/purchase has ever dealt with. Please read the "real" reviews on this page. If you want your purchase/sale to go through 2/3 times longer than expected and receive the worst service you have ever. Then don't say we didn't warn you. They just don't care and request the same information 3-4 times even though they have it. What an absolute nightmare!!

Again, I would give zero stars if I could, have only had automated replied until I complained, amazingly got a reply, but as I emailed back... another automated replyWe had to pull out of our purchase due to the survey, sent them the survey immediately and said we would not be purchasing, 2 days later they sent the contracts! I complained and 4 days later they called asking had we signed the contracts. Atrocious customer care, AVOID!!!!

Their conveyancer team has proven to be…

Their conveyancer team has proven to be inept and certainly inadequate at dealing with the sale of a house which I am purchasing. No chain, but it has still taken 6 months to reach a possible completion, which should be tomorrow but they have not confirmed yet, so we are up in the air! My solicitors have been unable to contact them they refuse to answer her e mails. The problem started right at the start when my solicitor noticed a problem with the Land Registry Plan which was inaccurate. Gilson Gray refused to do anything about it until the fifth month at the last moment. Land Registry saw the problem and redrew the plans, but this took months, with no word to my solicitor from them! The sale of this property which should not have taken more than 3 months (and that's generous) ended up taking nearly 7 months! If I could give lower marks than 1 I would

Alice Baker (solicitor at Gilson Gray)…

Alice Baker (solicitor at Gilson Gray) is an absolute Legend! We cannot thank Alice enough. A solicitor that is not only proficient, but also empathetic. It is clear that Alice has a passion for her profession and for the clients she has. Alice was there to help us navigate through what was an absolute mission when purchasing our home. Always available, or quick to respond if she wasn’t immediately available. Which is exactly what you want when purchasing a home. Her ability to empathise with our situation when faced with challenges was absolutely remarkable and second to none; this is understandably challenging when required to present facts in black and white. We thank you Alice, for your professionalism and support. And would highly recommend you to any one. If you are looking for a Solicitor, look no further than Alice Baker from Gilson Gray Solicitors. Forever grateful,Jason & Egle

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

We really wish we had read the reviews before going with the company for the sale of our house and the purchase of a property. They came recommended by Money Supermarket who seriously need to stop recommending them.We have a very straight forward case in that we are moving into an empty house and our buyers are first time buyers, meaning though there is a chain, it is minimal. We enlisted GilsonGray on 18th March. Upon enlisting, we were told we would receive a welcome pack, which has still not materialised. We are a same sex, married couple, both female, who have been referred to as sirs by two conveyancers multiple times, even after informing them this is not the case, prompting us to believe we have been victim of homophobia. As we have not long gotten married, my wife’s surname has changed and we had to send off our only copy of our marriage certificate. We sent this, signed and tracked, and GilsonGray lost it temporarily. We literally begged via email for them to actually bother to look for it and send it back as we needed it for our mortgage application, yet we found ourselves two weeks later pleading again, this time on the phone, for help. The only useful person we’ve communicated with in all of this, who unfortunately is not one of our conveyancers, answered the phone and found our certificate, which he informed me had been ‘sat on a pile waiting for scanning’ for the past fortnight. Little did we know, after two months of so called proceedings, GilsonGray hadn’t even STARTED work on our sale, thus had not produced or sent the contract to our buyer’s solicitors. They attempted to blame this on us, claiming we had not paid the £39 they required to start this work, yet we weren’t aware of this payment until 8th May, when we were emailed by a secretary, and she then took several days until 14th May to let us know how to send the payment/where to send it.Following this, we have been asked to fill out the same forms multiple times, have had to spend a fortune on next day postage as they have been waiting far too long to ask for signed documents. These have also been asked for days apart, meaning more and more money on postage. We are now almost at our 5 month mark, with zero response to emails and calls. They will not respond to me, my wife, either estate agents and none of the other solicitors involved. We have also been lied to on multiple occasions and only found out due to us making calls and visiting estate agents who have made additional calls for us. We are less than 24 hours from the house we’re buying going back on the market as the sellers have had enough, we have emailed and emailed, begged and pleaded, CC’d in the so called partner in conveyancing, Cherie McBean, as advised in lots of replies on other reviews, and still nothing. You’ve ruined our lives the last 4 months. Cheers a bunch. We look forward to making a formal complaint and gaining the support of the financial ombudsman if necessary.

Sky-rocketing costs through delays (ongoing)

I wonder if this review will get the same copy-and-pasted response as the other 1-stars (NB many from this Summer alone). A new telephone system is not an excuse for months of delays. It has now been two months in delays for completing a conveyance. I am not a direct client but Gilson Gray and their utter failure to respond to their own client, my lawyer or the estate agents are causing sky-rocketing costs.I am considering seeking legal advice (not from them!!) on whether we can seek compensation for the extreme delay.

Avoid at all costs !

Avoid at all costs ! We were assigned these solicitors by the agent we were buying through. In 3 weeks they had done nothing, they didn’t even chase up a memo of sale, I had to do it ! Afsha, who is mentioned numerous times in bad reviews, has a disgraceful attitude, extremely rude and even ‘confused’ my partners mother, who passed away during Covid, as my mother. The bosses there just try to cover it up by saying she ‘gets confused’. This company deals with legal documents daily yet can’t get simple things right like names, dates, properties. AVOID AT ALL COSTS !!!

Recently had the misfortune of being referred to Gilson Gray for a recent sale and purchase. The entire experience from start to finish was made unnecessarily stressful by their slow and inconsistent communication, having no sense of urgency and dropping the ball on several occasions leading to numerous issues and inconveniences. If you enjoy relentlessly chasing people to get basic stuff done then maybe you would enjoy the experience. Icing on the cake is ignoring their own policies by not acknowledging my complaint about the terrible service and taking 22 working days to respond to it, only to infer that it was my fault to have the expectation that they could be accurate and efficient. Enough said.

Not a good experience at all with Gilson Gray. We asked for a quote, and the price looked good so emailed back to accept thinking that was that. We heard no further communication from them at all which lead to a very stressful time as first time buyers. We found a property that we wanted to put an offer on the closing date so phoned the office to get it done quick. All advisors were busy, and we were told we would receive a phone back. We waited a while and didn't hear anything, so phoned up again and was told the same thing. Absolutely no sense of urgency or appreciation for the time sensitive offer that needed to be put in place. In the end we needed to very quickly find another Solicitor to sign up with, and have no regrets NOT using Gilson Gray. We still have never heard anything from them...

Unless, spent weeks with no contact, I then contacted myself finally to see how things going to get a reply 'I no longer work for this firm' I ring up and ask what's going on, they decide to drop my case because I cannot sit down with my ex partner to complete forms out together. If you are going through a divorce or break up do not use this company. shambolic mess

Where to start! Things went well at first (maybe cause my allocated conveyancer was off sick) Then i could not get in touch by phone as it constantly went to answer phone, didn't return email either. The first problem was when my estate agent rang both sides and one side was saying they sent the contract and the other saying they haven't received it, this caused a delay of a month, why not pick the phone up and say "did you receive the contract ok?" Complained to Gary Tyman and he gave an apology but then we are very near completion and my conveyancer asks for dates but nothing, again i contacted my estate agent who chased up and found that the buyers solicitor is waiting for answers to questions, questions answered by myself plus documents that would have avoided questions posted in April by Royal Mail Special delivery, again why not pick the phone up! Picture now is that my buyers mortgage offer runs out at the end of the month. I have contacted Gary Tyman to ask him to intervene and suggested my estate agent does not recommend Gilson Gray any more. I am considering taking Gilson Grays to the ombudsman. I certainly wont recommend them myself. Im 71 years on this planet and have bought and sold various houses but never came across such a shambolic mess.

Two completion dates missed.

Two completion dates missed.Replies sent from my selling solicitor to them which were then lost or ignored the Gilson Gray end. They then asked the same questions again, another week later. So infuriating. I did however send an email to every head of department & managing director at Gilson Gray that I could find contact details for complaining at the end of last week & there has been movement this week. Not much, but it's something.
