Townends and now Stirling Ackroyd following the rebrand has been my property manager and agent since 2006. They have been highly effective in securing tenants and managing the property. In particular I have worked closely with Nicole who is an excellent, and extremely responsive property manager. I viewed the 3 bed property amanaged by this agency on the 1st of Apr 2014 During the viewing we spotted damages in the roof area which is causing great leakage during rain from the roof into 2 rooms of the apartment. On the viewing, we had a written agreement that the property will go under repairs before our moving date. Townends informed us that they manage the property because the actual landlord is a permanent resident in Australia. In 15 days time from that date, we paid agency fees, Deposit and rent, and on our moving day we realized that nothing was repaired in the house. During rain, 2 rooms becomes wet through the walls even parts of the carpet gets wet, while the whole house becomes kind of misty that I have to keep the boiler on high levels in order to keep the atmosphere healthy to breath. On the same moving day (1st May) I called the agency expressing my frustration and disappointment, and their excuse was that they had issues in the check out but they did not introduce a solution, I requested an immediate cancellation of my contract and to move me into any other fit property, but they refused and blamed it on the landlord (which is in Australia). On the 2nd of May, I contacted the Environmental Health office in Croydon, and they instructed me to write a notice for the Landlord which I did. The Agency replied by doing investigations, then they send me another letter saying that they can do nothing because I should contact the Landlord, and that they have provided my Landlord details on my contract. Baring in mind, that the Landlord’s details on my contract is his address in Australia, while the UK address is the actual agency’s address, so every time I write to the Landlord, the agency is the one who is getting my letters. The tenancy agreement was based on offer letter which was signed by both of us, clearly stating that the house will go under repairs before our move-in date and based on this information I accepted the offer. Townends did not show any sense of professionalism while dealing with my issue, they put the blame on me for not contacting the Landlord (which I did), while they are managing the property. They gave me their registered address as the Landlord’s details, and communications keep going in circles unsorted. I am willing to escalate this matter to the court, DO NOT USE THIS AGENCY
