Dyrham Park

Dyrham Park - I visited this property today along with 4 children under the age of 3 years - two walking, two in a buggy. We visited the play area before wandering down to the house/gardens.

Agent replied · 21 March 2026

Hi Jean Seabourne, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I’m sorry for your disappointing experience with the shuttle bus at Dyrham Park. From what you’ve described, you should have been allowed to enter the bus and I’m very sorry this didn’t happen. For safety reasons, the passenger doors on our vehicles can be opened from the inside while moving, so we seat adults closest to the doors wherever possible. Each row seats three people, which typically means one adult with two children. However, we do have a back up vehicle with five seats together and extra space for wheelchairs and buggies. It runs during peak times or when another vehicle is unavailable, so using it may require a short wait or a vehicle swap - but we will always try to accommodate families who want to sit together. The team at Dyrham Park have highlighted your experience to all members of their team, so hopefully you won’t encounter any issues if you choose to visit again in the future. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review, and for your support. Best wishes National Trust

Shameful with bereavement

A month after notifying them of my mother's death they have not responded regarding a refund of subscription which was paid after her death. At a difficult time of notifying numerous institutions and authorities they are the only one with which there has been any difficulty. I'm not sure whether this is incompetence or indifference and from the reviews here it's no clearer. The National Trust does seem to have developed a reputation for being quite mercenary or at least uncaring.

Hi Suzanne, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I’m sorry you’re disappointed by the Spring edition of the National Trust magazine. We were pleased to be invited to interview the Prime Minister during our 130th year and put to him a series of pressing questions on subjects that matter to the National Trust, to our members and to our supporters. Our Director-General was able to speak up for nature, culture and heritage and interrogate how these essential parts of our society fit into his programme of Government. As a charity, the National Trust is politically neutral. We always work closely with the Government of the day and would welcome the chance to interview any Prime Minister, regardless of the party they represent. Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review, and for your support. Best wishes National Trust

Sheffield park

Sheffield park Not a dog friendly place anymore. I leave a very honest review to all places I visit with my dog. I’m not happy with all new sudden rules. What happened? New manager? Restrictions? Had so much pressure with my dog in a pet stroller! Not coming back again.Cancelled my membership. Wanted to get a piece of cake, food but I couldn’t. Have to leave my dog outside? Seriously? She was sitting in a pram,no floor touching and still has been told we can’t buy a cake because dogs are not welcome. So make an outside food and cake sale if dogs are not welcomed anymore (they use to be before and many many years)We are members of a National Trust last at least 3years. Went to this place at least 5 times. Went few times to the cafe (just to get a cake and Coffe) not sitting inside. If you are changing rules pls make a clear information at any time.My dog used a long lead all the time while entering this place many times. Last spring we were told not to use a long lead in the garden. Seriously? So put all children on the lead then. 😡They are destroying all little flowers with walking around and breaking some trees sticks. Leaving plenty of rubbish around and never respect others quite time . Don’t think I’m not a mother. I’m mum of two teenagers and absolutely not happy with the attitude and the way all been told to me and my dog today. I will leave this information to all my friends. Dogs are not welcome at this place anymore. They don’t like dogs anymore as before. #sheffieldparkgardens #nationaltrust #nationaltrustmemberAnother crazy rule- Saturday mornings are dog free? Oh, can I have Sunday mornings child free and we can enjoy our quiet time without screaming and mooning. Do not buy membership if you are looking at dog friendly places .

Julia · 23 September 2024

Agent replied · 25 December 2024

Hi Julia Thanks for taking the time to leave your review. I’m sorry you’re disappointed with where we do and don’t allow dogs at Sheffield Park. Dogs, and how much access they have, is a tricky subject for us. Unfortunately, there’s no easy solution that pleases everyone. We have to balance access for people who love dogs and want them to have as much freedom as possible, with those people who value dog free spaces or want them under close control or on short leads at all times. Our 500+ places are all so different, so local and regional teams are best placed in deciding what can be accommodated and any impacts, conservation and otherwise, that could be caused by dogs. Our aim is to strike the right balance so everyone can enjoy their visit and we trial different approaches locally from time to time based on the feedback we receive. At Sheffield Park, dogs are not allowed to go into the section of the café where food is on display. This is a legal requirement and not something we can change. However, there are provisions for visitors with dogs and Sheffield Park is seen as one of our most dog friendly properties locally. There is inside and outside seating for visitors with dogs at our main café, several dog bowls and tether points. There is an outdoor catering unit in the garden (The Shant). We ask that dogs are kept on short, fixed leads within the garden which is made clear on the webpage and in our handbook. We’ve received a lot of visitor feedback about how dogs on extendable leads have not been kept under control appropriately. I hope this clears things up a bit. Sorry you’ve chosen to cancel your membership but thanks for your past support. All the best. ChrisNational Trust

Dishonest and Corrupt, in my Opinion

If you have ever had to claim against the National Trust and been denied, I would urge you to re-look very carefully at what was given to you as evidence by the Trust and here is why…I suffered a head injury at a National Trust property due to lack of signage etc. I made a claim and the Trust quickly dismissed my claim by using photographic evidence. However, that photographic evidence showing adequate signage was challenged and the Trust eventually admitted they were taken 4 months after my injury and not before.I complained about this dishonesty, if you read the law it appears to come under dishonest misrepresentation possibly fraudulent misrepresentation. However, the CEO refused to engage on any level. So in my personal opinion and based on my experience, I believe the Trust is fundamentally corrupt and dishonest. It should not be allowed to be a Charity.

Enjoyable visit to Moseley Old Hall

Visited Moseley Old Hall, Wolverhampton. Took the one-hour guided tour. Was not disappointed. Kevin, the tour guide, was exceptionally informative and had a great repartee with all. Even after the tour had finished, he offered more information. What a great advert for the National Trust. All staff, including reception and cafe were amenable. Garden well laid out. Ample parking, even for a motorhome - yes, the approach is down a narrow lane, but Google Earth showed that! We have been to many NT properties and always enjoyed the experiences.

Inflexible and will cancel membership

Usually I have enjoyed national trust but after today’s experience I will not be renewing. I looked in the national trust book that comes with the membership and thought scotney castle looked good. I drove for 1 hour to be told you have to book in advance, I said I couldn’t see that in the book and the lady was quite patronising and said it’s in bright yellow on the website, great but not obvious in the book. Complete waste of time, I won’t be renewing my membership as it’s seems it’s totally inflexible no longer value for money. Shame they have to be so pathetic, what’s wrong with the old system?

An afternoon out at Dunham Massey, rubbish food

An afternoon out at Dunham MasseyThe house and gardens are excellent, it is an interesting place and has memories for me as I used to visit way before the trust took over. On the whole it has been a good thing. One think I have always liked about the trust is decent food however here I was disappointed. We chose the stables restaurant as opposed to the visitor centre cafe. We thought restaurant meant a better food experience. Sadly no, it was very poor. Only light lunches at the best. I chose a ham and cheese toastie from the very limited menu, only to be told they were out, ok I will have a cheese one, my wife chose the bean chilli. Our drinks arrived promptly and then my wife’s small bowl of chilli, then ….. after 15 mins my cheese toastie arrived only it had morphed in their system to a cheese and tomato toastie. I was underwhelmed and sent it back and asked why it had not come with my wife’s food, oh it’s made in a different part of the kitchen to the hot food : total failure to understand. Not a restaurant in any sense. The cafe whilst not having great food at least lived up to its name.

Pure Greed

My Son ran in the Great North run today raising money for charity, His Wife with their six month old baby was unable to find any available car parking spaces and had to use the National Trust’s Souter lighthouse car park.Ten pounds charged for the privilege. If your going to charge outrageous fees for car parking on a Sunday, why not donate all the parking fees raised on that day to to the Great North run’s various charity’s. Footnote. In response to the reply below and the overwhelming negative reviews of the National Trust, it’s quite clear this organisation will keep the extortionate fees charged for car parking for themselves and therefore not donate to the worthwhile causes.Would be interesting to know how many participants in the Great North run actually raised money just for the National Trust’s Charity.

Tim · 11 September 2024

Agent replied · 25 December 2024

Hi Tim Thanks for your comments. Congratulations to your son, I hope he achieved the time he hoped for and his recovery went well. You're right that we charged £10 for parking (free for National Trust members) on the day of the Great North Run. This is in line with lots of local car parks. As a charity ourselves, all the money we raise for parking goes towards caring for The Leas and Whitburn Coastal Park. We display posters about parking on the day in advance and post lots of social media posts about it too. I'm sorry if this was a surprise for your daughter-in-law but hope they enjoyed the walk to the finish line and saw your son finish. All the best. Chris National Trust

Bad customer service

I placed an online order on 17th August for a birthday present. After a week I emailed to ask for delivery update and was informed that the item was out of stock. I was very cross, when I placed the order and paid for the item at no time was I told it was out of stock, I wonder how long they would have waited before informing me of this if I hadn't emailed them. I waited for a few days for what should have been an automatic refund but again I had to ask for it. Today 3rd September, I am still waiting.

Worth being a member :)

This is our second year of being members and the joint membership price is fair. We are lucky to live quite locally to a fair few National Trusts sites and being members gives us the option to return to our favourite places as often as we want (Kedleston Hall, Shugborough Estate, Dovedale and especially, Calke Abbey, as it's where we got engaged!). We have visited places further afield and our breaks away are usually based on visiting a NT. We recently visited Bodnant Gardens on a birthday trip and want to return again in different seasons. It's absolutely beautiful! The NT sites have always been spectacular and its wonderful that we can take our own picnic at most of them (although sometimes we grab something from the in-house cafe). My recommendation is the curried cauliflower pasty, which is an absolute treat to eat! The staff/volunteers around each site are always helpful and friendly to chat to. We have always loved our experiences and days out at a NT site and have never had a bad visit! The app has been handy when out and about, and I enjoy receiving the handbook and magazines that come through the posts with updates. The handbook is always enjoyable to go through when planning our next few trips. It's worth being a member!

The Needles Isle of Wight

As a part of a boating trip we went to Isle of Wight and as we had an afternoon free rented bicycles from Yarmouth. We cycled along the trails and across to The Needles. We only had about 40 minutes before we needed to cycle back to Yarmouth to return the bikes. It would have cost us £7 each to spend 30 or so minutes in the visitor centre which is controlled and charged for by The National Trust. That would have worked out at £21 which seems too much money for the time we had. We are happy to support maintenance fees that are reasonable and proportionate however due to that not being the case left disappointed not to be able to check out a bit of our UK heritage in the brief time we had on the island.

Hi tomonamission. Thanks for your review, although I’m sorry you were disappointed in the charge for the limited time you had, and decided not to visit. As a charity, we rely on donations from members and visitors to look after all the places in our care. One example is the area of land leading to the Old Battery, and the landscape surrounding this. The fees are used to look after the site both inside and outside the pay barrier, including interpretation and some of the finest views on the island. I'm sorry this wasn't clear at the time and hope you’re able to visit on another trip. Thank you for your support.

Charging for car parks not only…

Charging for car parks not only contradicts the organization's mission of promoting access to nature and historical landmarks but also goes against the principles of public service and conservation. By imposing fees, the National Trust risks alienating potential visitors who may be unable or unwilling to pay for parking, consequently limiting the reach and impact of its work. Moreover, charging for car parks creates a financial barrier that disproportionately affects lower-income individuals and families, contradicting the values of inclusivity and diversity that are essential to fostering a sense of belonging and connection with nature. The National Trust should reconsider this policy in order to uphold its commitment to preserving cultural heritage and environmental stewardship for all members of society! And a boss who's on 200K per year yes you Hilary McGrady!!!

Andrew · 29 August 2024

Agent replied · 25 December 2024

Hi Andrew and thanks for your review. We want as many people as possible to enjoy access to nature, beauty and history and we're always looking to increase this. As a charity, we’re reliant on visitor entrance fees, membership subscriptions and other donations to continue looking after all the places in our care and to meet our ever-increasing conservation costs. There are over 200 million visits to our outdoor sites each year. The income raised at our car parks from non-members goes to maintaining both the car parks themselves, and the special places and facilities around them such as paths, parkland, toilets etc. Since implementing parking machines, we’re also better able to monitor visitor numbers and allocate funds to areas more accurately, particularly at outdoor sites. We've run several schemes over the past three years to provide access passes to people who would otherwise struggle to visit e.g. our 'Escape into Autumn' campaign where we offered one million free passes via social media and our website. We've also offered free passes via newspapers and Sky, including during the school holidays. For members, we offer a monthly payment option on most memberships to spread the cost over the year, and we offer discounted memberships for young people aged under 25 years (under 5’s go free). We also have a discounted Senior rate for our loyal members over 60. We'll continue to review our rates and offers. Thank you again for your review.

Disappointing sandwich

I have given one star for the egg and mayo sandwich I bought today at Greyfriars Worcester. I think of NT as having good quality food. Their scones are particularly good. However I will not be buying a NT sandwich again. It was very dry with the slightest hint of mayo, if any at all, and oh dear all those E numbers, 10 in total, and does it actually need "natural flavouring" which anyone knows is not natural at all. Come on NT I expect better than this.I will certainly be taking my own healthy sandwich in future and saving myself a few pounds too.It spoiled a very interesting visit.

No homemade food that we are used too at all. Really poor National Trust.

NT at Copt Hall waste of subscription

NT at Copt Hall, co5 7rd, well its fair to say that the site has been neglected, to a point where because of near waist high grass its almost a danger to walk on some of the so called permissive paths, you have not been able to navigate the sea wall most of this spring/summer & while the web site shows a nice vista being enjoyed...... its from last year 23, we have been members for 3 years thinking that to be one, gives us a voice to comment, nothing further from the truth, despite several emails NT just pass the buck & wont answer, those that do venture to this site are likely to be met by numerous commercial dog walkers who use it as part of their business`s, & my best guess "not NT members" with no proof of insurance, as NT wont answer this! which brings the mess they leave in their wake, supporting the NT is not on my to do list next year & I will do what the others do....... enjoy the limited facility for free,..... like the rest,............Reply to NT: Nobody has tried to contact me to discuss anything, & getting any informative reply to my enquiries has been a bit like "pass the parcel"..... pass the buck :), as for the sea wall, at last an admission that the Environment agency are to blame! yet they cut miles of surrounding walls a treat, Your description of remote is rather silly! with Colchester City Pop:120K+ Mersea 8k & minutes drive away, & the alleged small carpark hosting up to 15 cars/vans on any given day, being the 1st through the gate most days.....I will leave it there, with no further interest,

Hi Nigel.Thank you for taking the time to review.I'm sorry you've been disappointed with your visits to Copt Hall.As you may already be aware, Copt Hall is a remote tenanted farm, with a few car park spaces, a welcome board which we're updating and short permissive walks. The river wall you mention is maintained by the local authority, not by us.As the farm is a working agricultural tenancy, we don't have any staff, volunteers or facilities based on site. However, we do have a Ranger who works across sites spread across Suffolk and Essex and visits Copt Hall when he can. We're aware that commercial dog walkers may use the site and we're signposting that they must be licensed to do so. We're also asking our tenants to be vigilant and report any repeat commercial use. I'm sorry that for these reasons you're considering cancelling your membership. I believe the local team have tried contacting you in the past to arrange a meeting and discuss your concerns and queries. They would still be happy to discuss these with you. Thank you again for your feedback and for your support of the National Trust.Kind regardsSteveNational Trust

Neglected borders

Both myself and my partner decided to return again to Mottisfont near Romsey as the last visit was quite a few years ago . The gardens were absolutely stunning back then and we talked about them to friends and family showing them wonderful pics of all areas . However today was a totally different story we both are sorry to say but the gardens where in a very poor state .Both of us are gardeners and we could see the amount of work that needs to be done . Each border had large areas of weeds including bind weed the plants were looking very stressed. We however had a most enjoyable walk a long the river .

Hi Sonia.I'm sorry your visit to Mottisfont rose garden didn't meet your expectations. Last Autumn we appointed a new Senior Gardener and Head Gardener after two years without being able to recruit. Whilst they've managed to improve the presentation of the rose garden, we're aware we have a lot to do to bring it up to our expected standards. We're starting a programme of mulching to improve soil structure for the roses, replacing the box hedging which has been lost, and re-surfacing the pathways. We're also fundraising to replace the archways and other wooden structures in the garden. While I appreciate your visit wasn't what you'd hoped. I hope I've been able to reassure you we're working hard to get the garden back to the standard it should be.
