Gardens a disapointment

We went back to Nostal Priory today to view the gardens during summer what a disappointment I know it has been warm but the rose garden is none existent the rest has not been looked after at all it was a disgrace. Should not be charging a fee.

We have been National Trust members for…2 years

We have been National Trust members for a couple of years now and quite honestly we absolutely love it. We have bought membership for the family too so they can enjoy it. We thoroughly enjoy looking through the book of places to visit and we visit as many NT properties as we can get to; our favourite being Fountains Abbey. It is so beautiful and well maintained, lovely for walking and enjoying the fabulous scenery. The staff are all very nice too and will stop to chat as you are passing them by. The Deer Park is always an amazing place to visit and see the deer, seven bridges is also one of our favourite walks as is the temple walk. We went to the choir event and we were impressed with the light up of the Abbey. Thank you for maintaining this beautiful historic site so well and the many others we have visited. I feel much fitter and more educated about the places I visit and can't thank you enough for looking after them so well and making them available to the public.

Shugborough. A lovely property

Shugborough in Staffordshire is a wonderful place to visit. Lovely parkland and walks. Scenic and lots of interesting features. However we today purchased sandwiches which were quite expensive but we were hungry. The sandwiches were totally bland and tasteless. Very disappointed. The package stated they were made elsewhere not at Shugborough. The cheese ploughman’s cheddar was awful, Plastic cheese and tasteless chutney. Sorry but the supplier of these sandwiches should be ashamed

Volunteering with disabilities.

Volunteering with disabilities. The National Trust is proud of their disabilities awareness policy and awareness. But that’s where it ends nothing more then words.I have worked at two National Trust properties and suffered from Trust Managers and staff completely ignoring advice and treating me as someone who can hear!I always wore my Sunflower lanyard (Reconised Disability) with hearing impaired badge.Made no difference whatsoever. Management were well aware of my disability but that’s were it ended.I recently re applied to become a voluntary Gardener. First interview was planned and I showed up on time.No one knew I was coming so another interview was arranged two weeks later.Again, I arrived on time but no Manager to interview me.Have withdrawn my membership and am thoroughly disgusted at the way disabled people are treated.

Is the National Trust ashamed of its British inheritance ?

My wife and friend recently went to National Trust at Tyntesfield in Somerset.I refused to go and support an Organisation that has become ‘Woke’ and ‘Virtue Signalling.’The fiasco of the ‘hand wringing and grovelling apologies ’ of anyone vaguely connected with the Slave Trade was bad enough, but the recent revelation that Christian festivals like Christmas and Easter aren’t highlighted in the 2024 Calendar was the last straw.Ede, Diwali and Ramadan are obviously far more in keeping with this ridiculous and Politically Correct Organisation than presenting the British Heritage and it’s History.I’m definitely not renewing my membership, my wife can make her own decision.

Don’t care about peoples safety

Don’t care about peoples safety! I tripped over a bit of metal sticking out the middle of the path. I reported it in person to Sheffield Park Garden and followed it up with an email with photos to the National Trust. 2 weeks later nothings been done. The man at Sheffield Park garden said he’d put a cone over it. Nothing marks it and it hasn’t been removed. I jarred my back badly. It hurt for over a week. If an old person falls down they could break something. Shocked nothings been done. If this was USA I’d sue them!

Today my husband and I visited…

Today my husband and I visited Charlecote House. We had a very pleasant afternoon. The guides were exceptionally friendly and informative, all with a smile. The restaurant served a varied menu (much better than some NT properties), with well cooked and presented food. Again, the staff were friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and well maintained. The buggy was also clean and well maintained. But above all the house was lovely with beautiful grounds and parkland for long walks. Well worth a visit.

Corfe Castle tours

I took a guided tour around Corfe Castle with a tour guide by the name of Alistair and it is clear he is very passionate about his interest and sharing information to me and others on his tours. He gave out interesting information and kept the group engaged in the time we had. I enjoyed the tour immensely and learnt much more about the area by the end. I hope to see Alistair again if i was to do another tour or something similar as he made the whole experience amazing.

Can't refund duplicate membership

I was given a membership as a present - I have tried to contact someone to try and resolve this issue. I have tried to return the membership pack but this was refused once and undelivered the next time. It seems they just want to keep the money! Avoid like the plague. I have emailed the shop and customer services who told me my case was closed! I escalated to a complaint who said I would be contacted within 3 days - it is 5 days and counting and no reply. Gladstone’s Land a little Gem

Recently visited Gladstone’s Land in Edinburgh. It’s a history of the use of this beautifully preserved house. It is 3 levels reached by stone stairs so not for visitors with walking problems. If you are able climb to the top & work your way down. The volunteers David & Susan were really informative & explained the life of the house to bring it to life. We thoroughly enjoyed it

Joined as a member last year and I'm having a great time playing tourist at all the National Trust sites in Cornwall (I live here) on my days off.Absolutely loved visiting St Michael's Mount, Trelissick, Godrevy, Trerice, Trengwainton and Godolphin. Abysmal customers are just cash cows, the trust is not interested in sharing its treasures with the paying public

We visited Uppark, on an overcast October day, it was difficult for me to see, the lights were so dimmed down - I understand that the items need to be preserved from sunshine, but there wasn't any. With all the low lighting, we really struggled to read the signage or be able to look at things properly. The guides were very informative, but even their torches did not really give a good experience. We felt like they were usherettes in a dark cinema giving very little illumination on objects. Unless we were prepared to take up all the guides time to show us the details of the room, there wasn't any opportunity to really enjoy the experience. The website told us the servants quarters were not open but it did not advise us that most of the house was closed. In fact only four downstairs rooms were open - yet the guide book showed 11 rooms (plus 12 servant rooms) so our tour of the house took no less than 15 minutes. I really hoped to see the Tapestry bedroom as a Textile enthusiast, having driven over a hour to visit - but the room was not open. With no explanation. We then headed to the cafe, anticipating a nice lunch, but it was disappointing as well - there was only baked potatoes and cakes. (Their sandwiches had not arrived) Instead of lovely china cups and teapots, our tea was dished out in a paper cup, cake served on paper plates. I had to cut my scone using a wooden knife, (the dishwasher was broken) I am skeptical, I suppose they did not have a sink in their kitchens to wash up. (Please don't use Covid as an excuse - good hot water has been perfectly good enough for generations). The final disappointment was the lack of a National Trust shop, I was hoping to purchase some beautiful gifts - the range in the Trusts shops have always been good quality, and we particularly enjoy their soaps, books and textiles. Sadly, all there was were second hand books. We love the idea of supporting the National Trust, this is the second time we have visited a house, with the intention of joining but instead feel that the Trust is just not interested in its customers. Yes, they want us to fund these huge houses by our entrance fees, but even when all the house is open, only a very small part of these houses (I am speaking generally now) are available to view. We have been members of English Heritage now for several years, and have never experienced lighting so low as to make it impossible to see. Osbourne House was a delight! Nor do they lose the opportunity to have wonderful gift shops to increase profits. So I ask the following:Why weren't the other rooms of the house open? Why can't we see properly (please note English Heritage also have the same issues, but they do at least let the areas be lit well enough). Why couldn't someone get sandwiches? Why can't staff wash up and how long was the dishwasher out of action? Finally, does the trust really care about its visitors, or are we simply cash cows, as you don't seem willing to share the properties entrusted to you with the paying public.

Susanna · 13 October 2023

Agent replied · 19 June 2024

Hi Susanna,Thank you for your review.I’m sorry you had a disappointing visit to Uppark House. Unfortunately, when you visited, we had areas of the house closed. This was due to a recent lightning strike on the property, which caused the site to be closed for 10 days. We’re currently still undergoing maintenance works in some of the rooms, but decided to open those that we could, so visitors could still experience some of Uppark. I’m sorry you struggled to see some of the items in the house due to the lighting. As with many historic houses with significant collections, light management can be a major factor in the protection of these pieces. For Uppark, we have a lot of textiles and paintings which are particularly sensitive to light. We try to mitigate against this with our volunteers having torches to showcase certain items. However, on particularly dreary days, such as the day you visited, it can feel a lot darker inside. I have passed on your comments to our House team to see if something further can be done to light the rooms, especially during darker autumn days. Thank you for your feedback.I’m sorry our café didn’t have its full menu offer on the day. Whilst we try to arrange for our suppliers to deliver before opening, so that we can provide our visitors with a full menu, this is not always within our control. I’ve provided feedback to our food and beverage team, to see if there are any processes that can be put in place to stop us running out of sandwiches. We’re currently waiting for our dishwasher to be fixed. Unfortunately, this is taking longer than anticipated due to the supplier trying to find the correct part. As Uppark can often welcome more than 1000 people a day, it wouldn’t be viable for our limited staff to wash up all the crockery. I can appreciate that disposable cutlery doesn’t provide the best experience. However, this is only a short-term solution while we await the repairs. We’ve been promised the dishwasher will be fixed in the next few weeks. I’m sorry you feel we don’t value our visitors. I can assure you this isn’t the case. One of our most important values is to ensure our places are accessible for everyone, for ever. Without our supporters we wouldn’t be able to continue caring for the miles of coastline, woodlands, countryside and the hundreds of historic buildings, gardens, and precious collections we protect for everyone, for ever.Thank you again for your comments and for your support. Best wishesSteve

Locations and Staff great, online account very basic

The locations, information, food and staff have always been good. The Website information about locations also good but the new online account management is useless. Other than letting you change you name and address it does very little. There is no way to update or change membership type or add / modify children's details. Visited Coleton Fishacre last week

Visited Coleton Fishacre last week, I have to say one of the most beautiful houses and gardens I have ever seen. Lunch was absolutely lovely and access with dogs was fabulous. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of a very officious member of staff. Just before we left we let the dogs out for a last sniff around the car park. There is a gate at the top which says 'private', obviously we didn't let the dogs in there but a woman (in a black National Trust fleece) marched over and accused us of 'letting the dogs in with the bees'. I feel a customer training course wouldn't go amiss here.........apart from that I would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Senior Membership & the on-hold blues...

I've been trying to sort out senior membership for my elderly Mum who has been a member for several years. Tried 3 times and spent a total of 25mins on hold before I got through. |All the while being told that I should go onto the website - the very website that says that this needs to be done in person on their phone line. Irritating in the extreme!! My Mum is 90 and has been paying the full amount as far as I can see for the duration of her membership. It's only now that I've taken over her affairs due to failing eyesight that I've stumbled upon this. When I got through they put me on hold for another 15mins waiting for a manager! Come on NT, we appreciate what you do or we wouldn't be members. But having obtained our subscriptions it would be nice, honest and fair for you to invest a reasonable amount of your funds into looking after your customers as well as you look after your properties. Please also bear in mind that many of your members are extremely vulnerable and not able to sort this sort of thing out for themselves. Review just gone up by one star as I've been writing it whilst on hold, and have just achieved a refund! PS: why are you even asking for 'reviews' and 'stars' if no improvement has been taking place? Just a thought...

AMP · 1 September 2023

Dear AMP Thanks for review and I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you’ve had. We invested in an upgrade of our membership database earlier this year. While long term it will greatly improve our members’ experience with us, it has resulted in delays in responding to some supporters both on the phone and by email. I’m sorry you were impacted. We’re working hard to improve things. Now our new membership database is up and running and we’ve adjusted our renewal letters to make information about the Senior rate clearer. We’ve also restarted mailings to members who we’re sure are eligible, to let them know about the rate and how to apply it. Thanks again for your review and I hope your mum continues to enjoy her membership. Kind regards Chris National Trust

Very disappointed with the National…

Very disappointed with the National Trust in Cornwall, we have tried to visit a few of their places whilst on holiday and found Michell's engine house close and no reason given, East Pool Mine and Levant Mine and Beam Engine are now by appointment/pre booking only (which we didn’t find out about till we had driven the hours drive down to Levant) and nearly £40 just for a family to get onto St Michael's Mount is a joke no wonder the National Trust has got so many 1 star reviews, seems like they are only interested in big stately/country houses or ripping people off with an astronomical entry price, to say my opinion of the National Trust has very much gone down hill with its historic buildings in Cornwall.

Andy · 25 August 2023

Agent replied · 19 June 2024

Dear Andy I'm really sorry to read about your disappointment. Our website shows information about visiting all our places. Having checked, it does show you'd need to book the places you've mentioned in advance. I'm also sorry about the price of visiting St Michael's Mount. In 1954, Francis St Aubyn, 3rd Lord St Levan, gave a large part of the island and a significant endowment fund for its upkeep to the National Trust. However, The St Aubyn family retain a 999 year lease to live in the castle as well as running the visitor business under licence from us. A visit to St Michael’s Mount is free to National Trust members, subject to booking a free ticket in advance. This is to help manage visitor numbers at this popular destination. Further information can be found at www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk. I'm sorry again for your disappointment. Kind regards National Trust

National Trust holidays are a mixed…

National Trust holidays are a mixed experience. We booked two this year aiming to be close to a beach. We just came back from the last one in West LLansallos in Cornwall. The house is spacious and well decorated and furnished and would have been fine except for a few problems:On our second night a pipe burst in the downstairs bathroom spurting water throughout the ground floor. There were no instructions as to how to find the shutoff valve which took us some time to locate and then it took four people and all of the towels in the house to mop up the flood. We called the emergency number and the service they provided was awful. They could not even transcribe our phone number correctly. The caulking around the shower was leaking water which was damaging the ceiling in the hallway. We pointed this out to the plumber who caulked the shower when he repaired the pipe in the bathroom. We were very disappointed that once again the description of the cottage misrepresented its proximity to the beach. The description of the cottage says it is a short walk to the beach. It is 30 minutes along a very uneven quite steep sloping path. My guests said that to describe this as a short walk to the beach is “ridiculous”.This is the second National Trust cottage that we had had this description problem with this year. It is poor practice to lure people to stay in accommodation which is misrepresented like this.It is also very disappointing that they do not seem to care very much about the poor standards -- judging by the weak reaction to the lack of an effective response/apology for the disruption and misleading their guests. Indeed even months later the description on the first cottage we stayed in is STILL misleading -- saying the coastal path is on the Doorstep !!! A doorstep several fields and a twenty minute walk away.So much for "Trust"

Arlington Court.

Arlington Court.Nice visit but arrived later than expected-Hurried out after seeing the house which is huge, but you don't get to see much of it, sadly as only a few rooms to see. More is upstairs, but the small lift is not good for wheelchairs :(Disabled people pay full price, whilst their carer gets free admission. So wrong. We had tea and cake at the café after, child's portion sized pieces of cake, gone in 2 mouthfuls @ £3.75. Disgusting!(imagine a matchbox)National Trust are very expensive, We won't become members, they are a greedy lot. However, the birds outside the café were so friendly.

Chickadee · 9 August 2023

Agent replied · 19 June 2024

Hi Chickadee. Thanks for your review. I’m sorry your visit was disappointing. The house and carriage museum currently have last entry at 3pm and close by 3.30pm, although this is something we’re changing next year based on feedback such as yours. The upstairs of the house contains a staff flat, so that’s why there are a few rooms visitors can't go into. As you say, the house doesn’t contain a lift. There's a lift in the carriage museum up to the loft, where you can see over 30 carriages. I’m sorry you were disappointed in the cake portion, which I’ve fed back to the local team. Every penny spent in the café goes towards the care of Arlington. As you say, our admission policy admits the companion or carer of a disabled visitor free of charge. We adopted this policy many years ago after wide consultation, where the recommendation was that it should be the companion/carer who should be given free entry rather than the disabled person. Disappointing visit - Croft Castle

I have been a member my whole life - but not visited recently as I have dogs and visiting became impractical . I visited Croft Castle with a friend and he had to pay £14 to enter . We had looked forward to hot food and a coffee to start our visit . The sandwiches were stale and hard , the coffee cold . The whole atmosphere and ambiance at Croft was disappointing and I was asked to photograph a map so struggled to orientate myself around the grounds . I have visited many NT properties over the past 50 years and been enthused and excited by the opportunity they present . I am cancelling my membership and will make my own plans in future , shaping them around experiences that are both value for money and intellectually inspiring .

We have had a National Trust Family…

We have had a National Trust Family membership for years and have always really enjoyed the properties, gardens and cafes. However the cafes are becoming more and more disappointing. Today we visited Berrington Hall in Shropshire, nice greeting on arrival, but the service in the cafe was appalling, we waited at the counter for what seems like a very long time with absolutely no acknowledgement from the two women behind the desk. They were more interested in empty glasses anything in fact apart from acknowledging the three customers in front of them. Probably won’t bother next time

Racist, anti British organisation

Last year it was your woke blue plaque scheme, this year it’s your ‘diversity’ staff calendar. How sad that you treat your non diverse staff with such contempt. How strange that I can go to Normandy and learn what a great leader Winston Churchill was but not from our own National Trust. What a disgrace you are. I think you need to sack your diversity manager, they are obviously very racist!

A far cry from 8-10 years ago

I'm so disappointed to see the sorry state of many National Trust houses, gardens, car parks and catering facilities these days. I've visited several locations in the South West, Midlands and North West recently, and everything seems rather uncared-for and more overpriced than I remember - and most places are certainly worse value for money than equivalent RHS or English Heritage offers.

Hi Emma. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m sorry your recent visits haven’t met expectations, and whilst I can’t comment on the specific circumstances you’ve described, I’m sorry this has affected your view of the Trust. Like many in the heritage sector, we’re facing rising conservation costs well above inflation, but we remain committed to caring for places and improving experiences. I hope you notice positive changes on future visits, and thank you for recognising the efforts of our volunteers - we couldn't do it without them. Best wishes.
