Systems designed by occupants of old properties!

Attempted to purchase gift membership online. After several failed attempts to access my account sent message and was eventually informed that sytems unavailable "whilst they upgarde" - pathetic! Why no notice before my numerous attempts? Spent 20 mins buying membership over 'phone which highlighted that nobody at NT has tested the process as a user which overlooks options such as declaring to whom renewal notice should be sent. Final insult was to be told that delivery could be 14 days - to print names on a card and put in post. Clearly using occupants from their old properties to design & run their systems!

Discriminates against the disabled

Anyone thinking of going to lyveden national trust, don't bother. Another one who says positives about inclusion but don't follow through.Yesterday my partner were seated and served food by them. But someone had put the table by the lift. No staff noticed until we were eating. Instead of politely asking us both to move and waiting while we did, they just said the table is in the wrong place to my partner. I had no idea what the issue was my hearing isn't great. The staff then started moving the table while my food and 2 coffees were on it. When I complained I was told that I was abusive. No I'm autistic and I speak plainly. So if you're in a wheelchair, Deaf or autistic be aware that's not really a place for us.Complaints met with no manager on site, no contact details available. Rude staff in shop. Don't waste your money.Edit My problem wasn't moving. My uncle and I had to deal with wheelchair accessible issues too. My problem was not communicating with me .. my hearing isn't the best. Then dragging my table with my food and coffees on it. I have not received any email from the national trust despite complaining a week ago.Again you have no interest in the disabled whether that disability is visible or not.Like

Hi Diamond Phobe. I’m sorry for your experience at Lyveden. I’ve raised this with the General Manager, who’s let me know they recently emailed you about what happened. Unfortunately, the table you sat at had been moved in front of the lift and while you were having your lunch, a group with a family member using a wheelchair needed to use the lift. I’m sorry for the disruption, and that this incident tainted your visit. I hope you feel able to visit another of the places in our care in the future. Thank you for your support.

You CANNOT cancel monthly membership

Beware you CANNOT cancel your membership even when paying by monthly DD. This IS NOT clear when signing up and needs to be MUCH clearer. I’m now stuck with a membership over winter I won’t use.

We offer annual memberships that can be paid for by monthly Direct Debit. We believe we make it clear in our monthly Direct Debit terms and conditions that this is the case. You can find those here: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/membership/enquiries/paying-for-your-membership-with-direct-debit Many of our places are open 363 days a year, and I hope you can find some places to visit near you over the next few months. We went to Blickling Hall in Norfolk…

We went to Blickling Hall in Norfolk last week. We always like visiting here and do so most years. What a disappointment! First the public are now directed through the back way through the mostly unplanted vegetable garden, usually one of our favourite places, rather than the impressive front garden and entrance. The shop is now full of expensive toot rather than the wholesome lavender sprays, soaps, food items and interesting books they were well known for selling. So, we thought we would have something for lunch as the restaurant was nearly empty, but after queueing up behind three other people, who took so long to serve, due to very slow and inefficient system of serving, we gave up and left.No problem as the house was about to open.Well ! That didn’t take long as the first rooms were so dark we couldn’t see a thing. There was no hope of looking at the paintings as it was so dark, especially after coming in from a sunny day our eyes couldn’t adjust. Also several rooms were closed, so we were soon out of the side door before we knew where were were!Never mind, we love the gardens at the rear, with all the planted beds and herbaceous boarder’s.Again, such a disappointment, some of the beds were unplanted due to a weed problem! Being a gardener myself I have never heard of such a thing! And the lovely herbaceous boarders were overgrown and fenced off due to a structural problem!I would have been very disappointed if I had paid the entrance fee, us being members, surely a discount should have been offered if the place was now so poorly maintained? The best part of the day was when we left and were able to direct some incoming visitors, who were confused with where to get into the site. We directed them through the front way, so at least part of their visit may be enjoyable. So sad to take this once lovely place off our visiting list

National trust restaurant…

I went to the national trust restaurant on the white cliffs at Dover. My Daughter and I had a bakewell slice each. Both slices were horrible, with very little taste. What taste there was seemed very 'plasticky' and neither of us ate them. I took them back to the counter to tell the staff. The manager was called and all he seemed to care about was making excuses for the product and saying that it was very popular. He then said he would bring the refund to our table. After 15 minutes we were ready to go; no refund so my Daughter went to get it. She was told that the manager was on a break and they had to phone him to authorise the payment. They then refunded the cost of one cake so I had to go and get the rest. I realise that things can go wrong but the manager's priority should have been customer satisfaction and not excuses.I would like to add that the counter staff were lovely.

So im going through so financial…

So im going through so financial difficulties and cant afford to pay the membership prices anymore bear in mind ive been a member for a long time. Ive called up to cancel it and theyve told me i cant cancel it as its already renewed and have to wait for that year to be over with. I literally cant afford it. She said its a contribution. You're literally forcing me to pay this contribution. At this point if im being forced and held hostage over this then its no longer considered a contribution. I would have cancelled it and donated when i could if i had the spare change to do it. Once the years over i won't even donate anything to the national trust anymore. Not if this is how they do things. This 11.60 that ive been doing my best to keep up with was going to go towards my feeding myself every month, but that doesnt matter to as long as they get their money. Apparently theres a period of time that you can cancel being renewed and i totally understand that but i wanted to try and do my best to contributing and having the option to get out of my home for a day. Now i see i really cant afford to even do that but they wont let me cancel it. I'll never sign up again and just stick to going for a walk down the street.

Avoid this property in the Winter - too dangerous

The paths around the grounds of the Tredegar House property in Newport South Wales are a disgrace. In the summer they are passable but once the weather turns they become a muddy quagmire which are virtually impossible to get around unless you have a good pair of wellington boots on your feet. As a member who visits this site regularly for the beautiful walking that it provides I am having to look elsewhere for my walks as I feel it is getting too slippery and dangerous for me to continue to visit this property.

Kevin · 22 November 2023

Agent replied · 19 June 2024

Hi Kevin, thanks for your review. I’m sorry for your concerns about visiting Tredegar to walk in the winter. There are a few different path surfaces within the parkland at Tredegar. You’re right that some of the paths don’t have a gravel base, and are made up of the woodland floor so can get muddy. I hope I can assure you we continually maintain key paths around the parkland. We’re looking to improve our infrastructure and pathways across the side and aiming to increase the amount of accessible paths we offer. There are a few factors that we have to take into consideration whilst planning these works. The parkland is a registered parkland with historical interest and features, and we also have several notable trees to protect. We also have to consider additional elements such as drainage and tree root protection which can require quite extensive work to lay full paths. I hope this explains our current approach but also our commitment and ambition to improve in the future. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and for your support.Best wishes,National Trust

Check if bus running if you are going to need it for Dyrham Park

Dyrham Park is approached down a very long steep hill, a pleasant walk down but up is only for the reasonably fit. Nat Trust have a courtesy bus for customers to use. As I did not see the usual bus on arrival I asked if it was still running (first visit back since lockdown) and was told yes. However it was very random and stopped at about 4.45, when there were still plenty of elderly people needing to use it. No warning was given and I dread to think how those people got back up the hill. The man who drove the bus was incredibly rude and even drove off with one of the doors still open, luckily the elderly lady sitting there had managed to put her seat belt on so she didn't fall out. Horrible end to a mediocre visit as most of the house is closed whenever we visit.

UP DATE ON NATIONAL TRUST

This is the up Date TO STEVE: Thanks for reply, i do get this, but you are assuming all your staff know all the Christian holidays. As many of them may be from other back- grounds, you should treat all the religions the same and included the Christian holidays on your internal information and not assume everyone know everything . You may not have foreseen this unintended outcome, but it's time to amend it. I see no where you have added it to your calendar. Have you done that now? WHEN WE JOINED the national trust many years go, i never thought it would turn racist against the original British people. On top of that, it has become anti Christian and seems to be going into other religions that it has no right to do so. The trust is meant to be protecting our heritage and green land and our culture. And not become some sort of arbitrator to what is right or wrong. If you feel you cant' even put a Christmas message on a Christmas card, then i dread to think who is running the trust now. Start protecting the culture and the country side. Not some political oligarchy. Unless this changes, we will not be renewing our membership when it comes up.

Ridiculous and offensive woke madness

I find it hard to understand how an 'inclusivity' calendar that makes note of various religious festivals can exclude noting the dates of Christmas and New Year. Christianity has as much right to appear on this calendar as any other religion. This gives me concern about how the Trust is actually run so I will no longer support it in any way until it is truly inclusive. The trust has behaved immorality in many ways in recent years so it is now time to say it is not just an oversight but actually aggressive activity against many of the people it should be serving. Goodbye National Trust - I reject you as you reject me

All Inclusive Calendar

Reading about the current issue with the 'Inclusive Calendar' which includes other faiths religious holiday but not Christmas and Easter just fills me with disgust and shame. We are a Christian country still and just as much as we should respect and be inclusive of all faiths, and I send best wishes to all my Jewish, Muslim and Hindu friends and customers on their special festival days, for an organisation that is truly British and depends on public funding, this decision to print this calendar, whether they have produced other calendars which reflect Christmas and Easter, is appalling and whoever gave the go ahead should be ashamed. So very simply all of my family and friends will be cancelling membership with the National Trust and we all will actively encourage anyone we know not to support them.Have a lovely Christmas and Easter NT management

I've been a member of the National…

I've been a member of the National Trust for over ten years and although enjoy visiting NT sites but am considering cancelling my membership because of their attitude towards somebody wanting to fly a drone, their policies don't overule what is legal, threatening to illegally confiscate somebodies drone, vile, entitled attitude. Their increasing wokeness is also grating. Its no wonder NT membership is plummeting.

Especially when it comes to the comfort of other visitors or the potential impact on nature, not to mention the peace and tranquillity many of our places provide. We currently have no plans to adjust it but will review our procedures and guidance with your comments in mind.Commercial filming or photography, including content captured by Influencers, Social Media Auditors and Citizen Journalists, to earn money, cannot be undertaken at places in our care without a contract in place which has been signed by both parties. Cancellation policy is absolutely crap

Cancellation policy is absolutely crap. You should look into changing it. You can’t even move it to another date even with a valid reason. The reason they give is it is CHARITY and the funds are counted as donations. With enough time, members should be able to cancel or move the dates especially if it is a month away and not fully booked. If it was fully booked, totally understandable but it definitely isn’t. Considering it is still a month away, they are very inconsiderate. I did not want to cancel it but just to move it to another date. Will be rethinking our membership next year. Hopefully English Heritage will be much better.

NT is ruined by awful customer service

Unfortunately, the wonderful national trust properties are ruined by the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never been totally ignored, the way I am when I contact the National Trust via email. I have sent FIVE emails in a row across a span of a month with only one responded to, which wasn’t helpful. It’s such a shame because myself and my partner love the national trust and have done for many years. But how difficult it is to get to speak to someone on the office side of things?! This is ruining my opinion of the National Trust. All I wanted was to switch my direct debit payment to another account. This is not acceptable customer service on any level. Very saddened and disappointed.

Turned away from St Michael's Mount

Apologies but this is going to be a bit long.Visited St Michael's Mount, Cornwall in May. Visit was part of a long coastal walk. Tide was out so able to walk across causeway to the Mount. On arrival, told we couldn't get in as we hadn't booked online. Dejected, walked back to Marazion. Checked NT website for St Michael's Mount and found there were places available for visiting at the time we were turned away. Booked tickets online and returned to the Mount where we were greeted by another member of staff who told us staff have a contingency for visitors turning up without tickets - if there are places available, they check you in then and there. Was asked if I wanted to speak to a 'manager' and was taken into an office and spoke to someone who didn't introduce herself or explain her role. I shared my annoyance at being turned away and said I would complain to HQ and share my experience online at which point I was asked to leave.I used NT's complaint procedure and got a reply saying my complaint had been directed to staff at St Michael's Mount. Guess what? Nothing from St Michael's Mount. It seems to me the National Trust has lost its way. My membership card boasts, 'for everyone, for ever' which seems hollow given my experience.

We recently visited Colby Woodland…

We recently visited Colby Woodland Garden which to me was one of the best National Trust places I have visited. As a member I was allowed free parking, but non-members pay £6 per day per car. Considering the beauty of the meadow gardens, woods and endless streams I consider this excellent value for anyone. There is a brilliant cafe on site, a second hand book shop and you can easily access Amroth beach, what a fabulous way to spend a day. The staff on site were lovely and very knowledgeable, the peace and tranquility restorative, and there were wonderful areas for children to enjoy the streams and woods. I would recommend Colby to everyone, just be prepared for the narrow lanes!

Sheer incompetence and trickery

Last week we did a 34 miles round trip to see the Leith Tower that my American visitors were interested to see. When we got there, we found that the Tower was closed but their snack bar was open! There was no mention of such closure when we checked their app and the web before leaving.I cancelled my membership when the little dictators introduced a booking system for visiting their parks after the covid lockdown was eased. It seemed stupid to make a booking in half-hour slots for visiting parks that are hundreds of acres in size.Today, I noticed that their app has a " free admission" for the occasion of the Queen's Jubilee event. If you read the details it's free for the members and others have to pay admission! Since access for members is always free then who are they trying to con, the Queen, the public or both.I think the National Trust management must recuse themselves on the grounds of incompetence and dishonesty

Scandalous & no integrity

The laziest most incompetent organisation out there, who are just after your money, and not for the greater good of maintenance, upkeep and integrity of these public spaces either.Do have a read of the latest fiasco that the Lib Dems has documented (attached). It was in the community newsletter posted to all of our homes in Ham and Petersham - scandalous. This is not the first time the NT have behaved badly regarding money. I work in TV and they wanted to charge me a feature film (big movie) rate for a small BBC documentary insert with an emotional/sad narrative, which of course we could not afford on our small budgets. This has happened many times, and they are notorious in the television industry for being unhelpful and money grabbing. On top of this, a lot of (not all) staff at NT venues are incredibly rude - God knows why.I cancelled my membership years ago as a result of this poor behaviour - the best thing I could have done!Very sad for these beautiful spaces.

National Treasure

I absolutely love the National Trust, it is one of the few remaining jewels of this country. I always find the staff so helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. A while back I visited The Vyne and my blood sugar crashed, I went to the shop and bought some chocolate to aid my recovery, the lady behind the till could see I was not well, she offered me a seat in the shop, but I wanted fresh air, so I sat outside and she came to check on me after five minutes. I thought that was so incredibly kind. On visit to Kingston Lacy when one of the three godchildren I had brought with me, dropped his beloved Teddy, a gardener marshalled all the other gardeners to search for the bear and we were reunited in under 30 minutes. I will never forget this, I had not asked for her to do this and was about to brave telling a six year old that there was a strong chance he’d never see it again. I’m always excited for my next visit.

Don't treat people with respect

Why does this charity ignore members concerns? Why impose something and not enforce it? When questioned do they ignore the serious questions and concerns raised with a copy and paste response. Why should any person treated this way support this charity. Follow the trusts requirements to the letter, all evidence provided yet absolutely nothing done about it resulting in those guilty of breaking the rules constantly re offending because they know they can. Illegal activities knowingly taking place on trust land with a risk to the public reported to the trust and police ignored. Why? No accountability, answerable to no one and disrespect members wishes.UPDATE. I wait the bog standard "Copy and Paste response" the "excuses which aren't excuses but more evidence of how disrespectful this Charity treats it's members and concerned members of the public. The concerns are over your persistent refusal to hold rule breakers to account, namely Local hunts on your land which causes regular members / people using such land distress. Out of control hounds and thugs on quad bikes and horseback rampaging with any care across your land, all "reported to the Trust and Police" as required. All ignored as no action taken. Imagine rampaging through one of your properties?FURTHER UPDATE. In response to my update and the Trusts response, as expected "Copy and paste" standard yawn yawn response and excuses. Actions speak louder than hollow empty words and as a Charity you take no actions against Hunts trespassing. This has happened since your ban and even early reports of Trespass and public concerns haven't progressed into "Actions" into "prosecutions" which is why my question and concerns will always be asked for years to come. You have the finances to prosecute and stop such blatant Trespass and dis respect towards you as a charity, your members and the paying public and the wildlife you as a Charity are supposed to protect. Sadly supporting the Trust these days is supporting those against wildlife,, with foxes and deer being the main targets of hunting still going on, on Trust land. An empty meaningless ban and a total, arrogant, disrespect towards every member who voted to ban hunting on trust land. One prosecution is all it will take to send a message out to hunts but you fail to do this despite all evidence being available. Why? As a Trust user I no longer feel safe on Trust land be it myself, my family and my dogs. Dogs who I comply with the rules of the Trust when on your land. This isn't going away.

Hi Paul Thanks for your review. I’d like to assure you we take any incidents of this nature very seriously. We'll always work with the police and, where appropriate, other organisations in such circumstances. I hope you’ll appreciate we can’t comment on the ongoing investigations or outcomes of any reported incidents.Unfortunately, given the size of our estate, it’s not possible for our staff to be on site every time such an incident occurs on our land. We’re in touch with the hunts themselves to ensure they’re aware of where our land boundaries lie, and to clarify they do not have permission to operate on our land for any purpose. However, it’s unlikely the hunts will announce their intentions publicly so we’re often unaware of what’s taking place. This is why we ask anyone witnessing anything they believe to be illegal, to contact the police directly, in addition to notifying our staff on the ground where possible. You can find more information about our position on hunting on our website. Thanks for your support. National Trust gardens and taking dogs

Recently went to go to Geilston garden in Cardross , Scotland. Looked on national trust website, specific to these gardens which said they were dog friendly. Arrived to find that no dogs were allowed in on a Tuesday !! no mention of this at all on website. Very frustrated and annoyed , this could easily be made clear on website.National Trust you need to do better for dog owners , reading a couple of other reviews as well, either allow dogs or not . I would also say that when we went back a couple of days later , they were not dog friendly but dog tolerant , lots of areas could not go and on short lead all the time.

I’m so angry about this discrimination…

I’m so angry about this discrimination against Christian festivals on your 2024calendar I have been a member for many many years but I now need to re consider my membership. Why would I want a calendar that doesn’t portray Christianity. Or Jewish. We are a multi faith country and I for one am proud of it. STOP going on about Christian things that are provided at properties that’s just a pathetic excuse. Get with the mood of the country.

The calendar does mention religious holidays such as Eid, Diwali and Hanukkah, but also includes Pride month, Disability History month, Pain Awareness month and MS awareness week amongst many others. We try to represent the diverse society we serve in all that we do, and we want everyone to feel welcome when they’re visiting our places.Christian holidays will continue to be marked on the physical calendars sold in our shops and online. We won't be creating a physical calendar which excludes Christian holidays.I'm sorry this has made you consider whether you wish to renew your membership. Thank you for your review and for your support of the National Trust.Kind regardsSteveNational Trust

Check NT cafes take Biscuit

If you use the Biscuit app in NT cafes, may I recommend you check they accept it first. Had we known they did not take it in their Boscastle cafe today, I would have preferred to spend my cash in a private cafe. The staff first of all failed to believe the scheme, then when I provided evidence they looked at it as if it was a piece of rock from the moon. Not sure if that was the NT staff factor or the Cornish factor - perhaps a bit if both! If you do use Biscuit here’s a tip. Given most NT cafes have no internet connection, screen shot the vouchers and just delete them once they have been used.

Hi Dale Thanks for your review and feedback. I’m sorry you had difficulty using your gift card at Boscastle. While Biscuit does allow you to exchange your rewards for National Trust gift cards, we wouldn’t necessarily expect our teams to know about the app itself. You should be able to present the gift cards (wi-fi dependant) and them be accepted with no issue though. I’m sorry this wasn’t your experience. I’ve passed the details of your experience on internally to see if any additional training is needed. You make a good point about wi-fi and phone signal. Due to the locations of the places we care for this is often a challenge. Thanks for visiting and for your support. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your visit. Kind regards National Trust
