TrustpilotI’m so angry about this discrimination…
I’m so angry about this discrimination against Christian festivals on your 2024calendar I have been a member for many many years but I now need to re consider my membership. Why would I want a calendar that doesn’t portray Christianity. Or Jewish. We are a multi faith country and I for one am proud of it. STOP going on about Christian things that are provided at properties that’s just a pathetic excuse. Get with the mood of the country.

Hi Diane,You may have seen we've had similar comments on this subject recently. For consistency, I'm responding to you with the same information we've used before.Hopefully, I can clear up a slight misunderstanding from recent media articles. This matter was also raised at our AGM.The Inclusion and Wellbeing Calendar is an internal resource, used to keep staff and volunteers up to date about awareness months and minority religious and cultural celebrations they might not otherwise be familiar with. For this reason, Christmas and Easter, which are national holidays, are not included on the calendar. We know that most of our staff and volunteers have a good awareness and understanding of these festivals already. The calendar isn’t specifically focussed on religion or religious events. The calendar does mention religious holidays such as Eid, Diwali and Hanukkah, but also includes Pride month, Disability History month, Pain Awareness month and MS awareness week amongst many others. We try to represent the diverse society we serve in all that we do, and we want everyone to feel welcome when they’re visiting our places.Christian holidays will continue to be marked on the physical calendars sold in our shops and online. We won't be creating a physical calendar which excludes Christian holidays.I'm sorry this has made you consider whether you wish to renew your membership. Thank you for your review and for your support of the National Trust.Kind regardsSteveNational Trust

TrustpilotCheck NT cafes take Biscuit
If you use the Biscuit app in NT cafes, may I recommend you check they accept it first. Had we known they did not take it in their Boscastle cafe today, I would have preferred to spend my cash in a private cafe. The staff first of all failed to believe the scheme, then when I provided evidence they looked at it as if it was a piece of rock from the moon. Not sure if that was the NT staff factor or the Cornish factor - perhaps a bit if both! If you do use Biscuit here’s a tip. Given most NT cafes have no internet connection, screen shot the vouchers and just delete them once they have been used.

Hi Dale Thanks for your review and feedback. I’m sorry you had difficulty using your gift card at Boscastle. While Biscuit does allow you to exchange your rewards for National Trust gift cards, we wouldn’t necessarily expect our teams to know about the app itself. You should be able to present the gift cards (wi-fi dependant) and them be accepted with no issue though. I’m sorry this wasn’t your experience. I’ve passed the details of your experience on internally to see if any additional training is needed. You make a good point about wi-fi and phone signal. Due to the locations of the places we care for this is often a challenge. Thanks for visiting and for your support. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your visit. Kind regards National Trust

TrustpilotNational Trust
I have been a member of the national Trust for years and fully enjoy going to the different sites. What I will say is we have always enjoyed the beautiful food which we never minded paying a premium for but on the last visit to Lanhydrock the food was very disappointing and not worth the money. Shame as is always a part of a great day.

TrustpilotI am gobsmacked how expensive it was
I am gobsmacked how expensive it was, no complaints about Attingham Park but my gosh the prices were on the steep side. Took some friends who were over from Canada.I thought maybe membership would be an option but who on earth in your marketing team decided that you would NOT OFFER ANY DISCOUNT FOR PENSIONERS (unless they’ve been paying full membership for the previous three years? How bleep bleep stupid. It gets worse you offer 50% discount for 18 - 25 year old’s ….Utterly crazy pricing structure, maybe employ some people who understand how to make a business thrive and you’d be doing a better job, you’d certainly generate more income which I’m sure is needed. Having said the above I looked at the salaries you pay and my gosh you’re certainly conservative, maybe increase membership and pay a better salary to attract fresh thinking staff, at all levels but especially the team that dreamt up the membership costs.

Hi Steve.Thank you for your review.I'm sorry you're unhappy with our membership pricing. You're correct, that our senior rate is offered to members aged 60 and over who have held an active membership for at least the last 3 years. This is because our senior rate is a reward for loyalty. Our Junior and Young Person memberships are set low to encourage young people to become members of the National Trust. Young people are an underrepresented group within the Trust. For this reason we feel it's important to increase access and participation for this group. We review our pricing regularly to make sure that we can balance being able to look after our historic places, green spaces and collections to the high standards they deserve. While also providing high quality days out for visitors. Thank you again for your feedback. Best wishesSteve

TrustpilotPaid for 12 months only got 9
Pay for 12 months - only get 9. We joined in July on a trip to Fountain Abbey, thinking the membership would be good value considering we travel a lot and can visit a lot of properties. We were told we’d get an email which we could use to confirm membership until our cards came through. Unfortunately, we received nothing until October (not even an email confirmation), at which point we were sent membership cards but no members handbook, parking permits or any other details. We are STILL waiting for a full membership pack which will allow us to access the benefits of our membership. If you are considering membership, I’d only recommend it if you are happy with the price for 9 months (as you’ll have to wait until the trust sends you your card or an email to be able to actually use and it seems to take them a quarter of a year on average to do this) and if you don’t mind not having access to any other benefits (eg handbook and parking) until the trust decides to share those benefits with you.

I've emailed you separately so I can identify your membership and put things right for you. Thank you.

TrustpilotWe are regular visitors to the national…
We are regular visitors to the national trust properties and our local property to visit is attingham park. We try to visit every week to take the dogs for a walk and many years ago it was mine and my wifes 1st date location. We always have a coffee at each visit especially on the colder drys to warm us up ready for the big walk. Not so long back we often commented to each other how reasonably priced the coffees were compared to other places and how ingenious the disposable cups were which helps the environment. In fact we were so impressed that the NT were one of 1st companies in the uk to introduce the said cups way ahead of the large coffee companies...brilliant! As stated the drinks WERE reasonably priced and had been for a while but in the last year or so each drink has gradually gone up by 65p, this includes a 15p charge for the cup. I do appreciate the NT are trying to encourage the purchase of a reusable cup to do away with disposable type but can I point out the disposable ones are compostable. We never dispose of the cups anywhere but the relevant bin upon exit and it is a little frustrating carrying the empty cup around for hours and miles whilst walking 2 dogs as there are no rubbish bins and minimal dog waste, it would be worse carrying the reuasble cups around for a long time! Back to the price increases, I am aware of increasing costs everywhere but NT seem to have taken in to to a higher level which discourages sales, many a time I have been in the queue and looked at the cakes etc but been put off by the price. I was behind a young couple last visit and they were having to tell the kiddie "no its too expensive" look at the soft drinks being sold between 50-80p higher than most shops. Its the age old mistake of sell higher and think you are getting more profit but in reality you are selling less. Sell slightly cheaper without being greedy and sell more...its common sense! I appreciate the NT is a charity but seeing the greed IS putting us off going as much. They do get so much of us in membership but for the 1st time in many years we have spoken about cancelling our membership!.....such a pity.

Hi Dave,Thank you for your review.Firstly I'd like to say, It's lovely to hear you and your wife have such a special connection to Attingham Park. I'm sorry you're unhappy with our food and beverage price increases. I appreciate this is disappointing during the current cost of living crisis. I'd like to explain our reasons for these increased charges.I appreciate that it's a really difficult time to raise prices in our cafes. Unfortunately the price rises have been unavoidable. We've experienced price increases for both the ingredients we purchase and to heat, light, run and staff our cafés. We have tried as hard as we can not to pass price increases on, but we have seen such sharp rises recently, that we now have to balance these increases in a way that is also right by us as a charity. We continue to benchmark our prices so they're competitive with other similar businesses. The disposable cup charge is contentious, but we feel necessary. Single use cup wastage is a real problem and we need to make sure as a conservation charity that we’re trying to reduce this as much as possible. All the money raised from the 15p charges will go into a ‘green fund’ to fund environmental projects and initiatives. In certain cafes where we're unable to provide crockery, we don't apply the 15p charge for a disposable cup.Due to the increases in ingredients, labour and energy, we simply can’t charge less. We have to be able to cover our costs and ensure our long-term future, while also offering value to our members. Thank you again for your feedback. I'll make sure to share this with our Food and Beverage team.Best wishesSteve

TrustpilotOverseas pass does not provide value compared to residents annual
Overseas pass is comparatively very expensive. It costs so much for a week compared to how much UK residents pay. Then we were told we had to pay parking on top!! I hear this unfair policy has now changed and rightly so. In view of these points I took out an annual membership which gave value, despite only being on holiday for 3 weeks.

TrustpilotI live surrounded by a nature reserve
I live surrounded by a nature reserve. There are many wealthy landowners around here. One particular landowner insists on mowing the surrounding area near his land. This area is rife with biodiverse life, and should not be mowed. I periodically speak to the National Trust representative of this area, who is always so sympathetic and lovely, always promising to talk to the landowner and inform him that it's not ok to interfere with a nature reserve that isn't on your land. Nothing changes, grass keeps getting mowed.Cancelling donation. Corrupt.

When asking if we could use a wheelchair today at The Vyne, they could not have been more helpful or accommodating to our needs and at Polesden Lacey we were able to use the buggy vehicle to take us to the house and the very kind lady driver came back to look for us to take us back again. Hi Jacqueline Gittens, thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
I’m sorry you’re disappointed you can’t pay for gift memberships using monthly Direct Debit. We made the decision not to offer monthly Direct Debit for gift memberships, as some gift givers cancel their subscription part way through the year. If this happens, it can cause embarassment as the gift receipient’s cards won’t allow them to entry to our places. Data Protection Regulations mean we can’t talk to the gift recipient about the payment, as it’s not in their name, but the gift recipient can’t visit for free as they thought they could. Your feedback about how we position this on our website is helpful, and I’ve shared that with the team who manage that part of our website - I'm sorry we caused any confusion.
Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review.

TrustpilotPointless membership for dog owners (South West)
If you have a dog and like going to the same place that allows dogs, then it is worth the money. If you want to visit other places, then it is not worth paying a membership fee as the majority of places will only allow assistance dogs. I have just seen five places online that I would like to visit, but unfortunately, no dogs are allowed! I pay £10.60 a month membership fee and I cannot even visit my favourite (closest) National Trust establishment, Dyrham Park. This place only allows dogs in a tiny area next to the car park. I appreciate that dogs cannot go into stately houses, certain gardens, Deer parks, etc,. However, at Dyrham Park, there are other areas that behaved dogs could go whilst kept on a lead; after all, it would appear that assistance dogs can go anywhere, so this seems very unfair. As a result of these draconian rules, it means that I am totally restricted from visiting other places as I will not leave my dog at home for the day alone. It questions as to whether the National Trust will be around within the next twenty years. I am sure I am not the only person to be paying money for nothing. Judging by the majority of one-star ratings, the National Trust have a lot to take into consideration. It's quite likely that Chris (who appears to be the spokesperson from what is evident) will comment on this; however, there is enough evidence on Trust Pilot to suggest that their defences hold no gravitas.

Hi DB,Thank you for your review.I'm sorry you're unhappy with access for dogs at some of the places in our care. I can see this is a subject you're very passionate about. Our aim is to strike the right balance so that everyone can enjoy their visit. This means we have to try balance access for people who love dogs, with those people who value dog free spaces. As all the places in our care are so different, the local teams are best placed in making these decisions. They decide what can be accommodated and determine any impacts, conservation and otherwise, that would be caused by allowing dogs. This will then be reflected in our pawprint rating system, which grades how dog friendly our places are. Despite this, we know we can do more. We're currently running a national piece of work focusing on how we can make our places more welcoming for dogs and their owners. I hope this reassures you we're focussed on this issue and continue to take it seriously. Thank you again for your feedback and support. Best wishesSteve

The senior rate is a reward for our loyal members aged 60 or over, who've been a member for at least the last three consecutive years. They're entitled to 25% off their subscription. We are in a period of significant pressure on people’s finances. We understand that, and we are very grateful to those who can continue to support us, particularly our members, who are at the heart of the National Trust. Our work is always guided by our purpose which is to promote the preservation of nature and history for everyone. And we want to make everyone feel welcome. We don’t necessarily expect everyone to be interested in everything we do, and that’s okay. Different people want different things from their membership and visits. TrustpilotRipped off as membership not needed
Looked up 3 places to visit this week online and as they would have cost over £80 for the two of us we decided to buy an annual membership. Have since found out all 3 places are free to visit on the days we plan to go as part of heritage open days which is NOT clearly advertised on their website - if I’d known this we wouldn’t have bought a membership and as there are very few NT places near us it’s a lot of money wasted in a cost of living crisis. We save hard for all holidays and cannot get a refund as it’s a charitable donation which is ridiculous when you visit the sites you are charged a set entrance fee and are not asked for a donation.

I’m sorry you didn’t feel we made this clear enough. The information we’ve given you about refunds is correct. We can’t provide membership refunds as it’s a condition of HMRC Gift Aid rules. Membership is classed as a donation to a charity. Entry to our places for non-members is also considered a donation and subject to gift aid rules. I hope you don’t consider your membership donation wasted and have opportunities to visit some of the special places we care for. TrustpilotNational Trust unhelpful, inflexible and bureaucratic
Traveling from Australia and wishing to see some of the properties that the National Trust manage in the UK during our two months driving tour we contacted them to inquire about membership. Found them to be hopelessly inefficient with email responses - which took over a week and multiple staff to answer who do not bother to read the thread to understand the whole story - which we initiated one month before we arrived in the UK. They were also overly bureaucratic and inflexible with rules. Insisted that the membership card had to be sent to Australia even though we had already left! When we went to Stonehenge (28th July 2023) we found English Heritage to be far more accommodating giving us a Seniors membership for only GBP 76 and even refunding the booking fees we had already paid for entrance tickets to Stonehenge. When we went to the Giants Causeway (11th August 2023) we again inquired about membership with National Trust. They were not only much more expensive GBP 104 but they also refused to refund the entrance fees already paid to enter Giants Causeway before we used it!

Hi Frederick Thanks for your review and I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment. We upgraded our membership database recently which has caused some issues responding to emails. Our service has greatly improved now but I’m sorry you were affected. We don’t offer a refund on admission fees if a member joins after making payment for entry. This is due to HMRC rules around Gift Aid and a decision was made not to provide a refund on Standard admission tickets regardless of Gift Aid status. Given that millions of visitors come to our places each year this prevents confusion at reception points and minimises the risk of a Gift Aid ticket being refunded in error. If we did so, this could jeopardise our ability to claim Gift Aid, which is worth more than £35 million to the Trust annually. I’m sure you’ll appreciate that as a charity, we simply cannot afford to place this income at risk.I’m afraid I can’t comment on English Heritage’s actions but I’m glad you enjoyed your visit to Stonehenge. It may be too late but we do offer a touring pass which may have been useful to you as it’s all digital. TrustpilotNT don’t respond to e mail complaints
I sent an e mail complaint to the National Trust on the 26 July 2023 following a visit to Wimpole Hall , Cambridgeshire. We were charged full price but upon going to view the house , was told the entire downstairs was shut . We should have been informed of that before our money was taken , not afterwards. Certainly misrepresentation and feeling somewhat ‘ripped off ‘ . Parts of the gardens were also shabby . I received an automated response to my complaint saying my number is CASE-00313154 and I will receive a response shortly . After waiting 6 weeks nothing . Tried calling , can’t get through just hanging on and on . No wonder there are so many negative reviews about NT on this site ( nearly 80% ) ; has anyone at NT actually noticed this ? I would like a proper response to my complaint but don’t hold out much hope . How the NT expect loyal and regular visitors to their properties when they don’t treat patrons with any degree of respect , is beyond me . After this experience we will visit private homes , not NT , they don’t deserve our time and money.
