GoogleOn 4th July 2026, an estate agent from Winkworth had a viewing with a couple for a ex-council flat in CRH(council estate in Clerkenwell) and said to the couple “unfortunately, there are still council flats in the estate”. First of all, what’s the issue with an actual council estate having council flats? Yes, some of the properties are private through ex-council tenants purchasing their property through the right to buy scheme. But why would a real estate agent from Winkworth use the word "unfortunately" not only is this unprofessional it's deeply rooted in classism and social stigma against social housing. It breaches professional codes of conduct, so this will be passed onto the Property Redress Scheme. To the estate agent, who used the word ”unfortunately” many incredible people have lived in council housing just to name a few e.g. Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya, Oscar-Grammy Award winner Adele, and seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton. Comments like this might go over people's head but social stigma cannot and will not be ignored!
