I want to trust the stars, but Trustpilot still makes me second-guess them

I’ve turned to Trustpilot more times than I can count, before buying a gadget, booking a service, even choosing a course, and at its best, it feels like a shortcut to the truth, the kind of honest heads-up that saves you from a costly mistake. I’ve left reviews myself, both glowing and frustrated, because I know how much those words can matter to someone else. But I’ve also scrolled through pages of five-star ratings that felt too polished to be real, watched honest complaints get buried or flagged, and walked away wondering whether the score I was looking at actually meant anything. I don’t need Trustpilot to be perfect, but I do need it to feel fair. I’ll keep using it, I just wish I didn’t have to question it so often.

Trustpilot allows companies and businesses to flag reviews simply because they don’t like them. They’ll then go along with the businesses lies and put the burden of proof and the accusations on the customer. Even when there is clear proof this is going on such as businesses only ever flagging 1 star reviews, never 2,3,4 or 5 star reviews and when the review clearly shows a customer had a bad experience, trustpilot plus the businesses silly games and accuses the customer of picking a random company they didn’t do business with and making up a fake story. Who does that? If it’s done, it’s not common. I doubt people have the time to sit around reviewing companies they never did business with yet trustpilot entertains it. I’ve even tested this and left a 5 star review for a company I never heard of. No issues yet whenever I have a bad experience and leave a bad review, I always get the “add more information because the business is pretending they don’t know you so they can abuse our systems that protect against fake reviews”and “we’ve had to take your review down because the businesses doesn’t think it’s genuine(and it gets a 1 star review removed and allows them to hide dishonest, greedy, behavior). What good is a review site if the companies and businesses being reviewed can mislead the platform into removing the reviews they don’t like in order to hide behavior they don’t want potential new customers to know about? You end up alienating all the customers who have bad experiences and reducing your platform to dishonest businesses and paid for/fake reviews.

I’ve had a mostly positive experience with Trustpilot. Their email support is responsive and helpful, and the platform itself is easy to use. The only downside is that I’ve noticed people scraping my email and trying to solicit me, which is frustrating. I’m not sure that’s Trustpilot’s fault, but it does take away from the overall experience. For that reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5.
